A wild, wild, civilized world.

A wild, wild, civilized world—with these words I'll begin this post about familiar plants we can easily find in any garden or vacant lot, including plants of the nightshade family, the familiar tomatoes and their relatives.

What does wildness and civilization have to do with it, you ask... It's either simple or very complicated, lol. It's up to you to decide.

Civilization can be wilder than the wildest jungles, which is essentially where the ancestors of all tomatoes came from... Thanks to Columbus :)

You know, it's surprising that they thrived in a harsher and cooler climate, but who among you has never picked a tomato pod from a bush in your garden?

If you've never planted tomatoes and want to learn how to do it right, you'll learn about the many pitfalls, tomato diseases, the need to pluck off shoots between branches, treatments with whey or iodine-containing foliar sprays, and the sheer labor required to achieve juicy, beautiful fruits. Is it a civilized planting?

In essence, it's a wild planting, as the tomatoes you see in the photo grew by chance in a fox-filled clearing where people had trampled the soil and had picnics, and weeds were everywhere.

No one tended these tomatoes; they grew on their own, without human intervention. This, from the perspective of the vegetable itself, is more civilized, because in this case, the marginality—and in the civilized world, marginality is always taken into account—is almost 100%.

And nearby, in the same clearing, grew wild relatives of tomatoes, black and red nightshade, photographs of which were taken on the same day and in the same place, and they also felt great.

I'm not discouraging anyone from picking up a hoe and loosening the soil or weeding the land, but compared to this highly civilized wilderness, gardening is savagery and a waste of our time. Someone simply taught us how to plant tomatoes incorrectly, and someone needs it :)
