Let's Do Better.

“Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader – not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon.” - EL Doctorow

So, I have been back in this space for a minute or two now, and am loving every single second. Despite having started here approximately six years ago, I was gone for a long time and only just recently jumped back onto the content creation carousel. As would be expected - life is forever moving and plenty has changed in this space, but one thing will forever remain… and that is - people are here to share, which is always great to see - regardless of where or how.

I stopped writing altogether for several years - I decided to begin putting my personal expression into visual form for a few years because I was no longer feeling welcome in the space which I chose to share my written content.

unexpressed.png

Expression is a very delicate thing…

Especially, when you choose to express like I did. Sure, I have also written about stuff which isn’t particularly emotionally attached over the years - like food, gardening and art etc., but a large portion of my writing history has been enormously emotionally driven and “the written word” always acted as an outlet for me. It was a means of healing and a space of vulnerability.

When I began my journey in the writing world (which was long before Steemit or Steem even existed - to me anyway lol) It was an incredibly daunting step to take. “Sharing” with strangers can be overwhelming and it was for me too in the beginning - but that is just the thing! Whether we care to admit it or not, “us humans” crave most, the one thing which we ignore more than any other… SUBSTANCE - and on the flipside of that, is the undeniable fact that personal growth is inevitable when we step outside of our comfort zones. Combine and compound those two ingredients together and I can promise you… you’re on the right path.

Perhaps, before I go any further - I should justify the "why" of my passion for this kind of thing... Allow me to take you down a facet of my memory lane...

I left school at the age of 15 as I was failing hopelessly at pretty much everything due to my complete disinterest across the board and well, drugs. I lived with my mom at the time, and after much effort and persistence with my father - as well as "under-age" acceptance from the college itself - I went to study graphic design and handmade cards was something I did to make money for social spending. Nothing grand really haha - and as an adult I am not sure whether people bought them because they felt sorry for the 16 year old girl selling them or because they actually liked them haha.... but either way, they sold! They were sold plastic packaged for 5 ZAR at the time. And as you can see I saved the ones I liked most which were mostly daisy designs haha... it is my favourite flower :)

card1.jpeg

The next memory was the third step in my entrepreneurial journey... the second one, oddly (because it was my ultimate game changer)... I didn't keep any samples of. When I left my last place of employ, it was because of an idea inspired by one of my brothers. The same brother that I had helped to sell the dummy car alarms some years back... and the concept was promotional fridge magnets. I designed and printed 5000 of those per month and had them distributed to relevant suburbs in Cape Town.

They were "info magnets" and on them, I would sell advertising space to businesses and services that people generally wanted on demand... such as electricians (that would be my brother haha), food delivery, locksmiths etc. and then they would also display all local emergency numbers etc. I did that for two years. Aside from the brutality of cold-calling, it was probably the easiest money I have EVER made! I was 19 years old, working two days a week and living completely self-sufficiently. The economic climate here in SA eventually made that venture challenging. People no longer had the excess cash to fork out so easily.

Following that, was a product which I created called "The Business Bulletin". It was a throw away advertising leaflet of which there were 8 kinds (each suburb specific). I designed, printed and distributed 80 000 of those monthly. Essentially, people purchased an advertising slot on the flyer to promote their business. I simultaneously used this as a tool to promote my own design and print services which is what helped ultimately build the 7500+ client base that I continued to service until 2018. This particular venture lasted about 6 odd years. Both of the above were very successful, but with the internet beginning to dominate the below the line advertising sphere, the sales became quite challenging towards the end.

b1.jpeg

At approx. 22 years of age, was an alternative magazine which I launched at the same time as I was doing the business bulletin. It was called "Vibrations". It was a small magazine (inspired by the tiny "Glamour" woman's magazine) but was geared at the holistic, alternative and health market. I compiled, designed, printed and distributed 5000 of those for free to suitable retailers all over the Western Cape every alternate month for 2+ years. The advertisers funded it. It was enormously successful and loved by everyone that picked it up.

Each issue was approx. 44+ pages and was content rich. It was an INCREDIBLY stressful venture to take on and after two years of dedicated readership I added a 5 ZAR price tag on it, which is not even enough to buys a Mc Donalds cheese burger... and suddenly everyone was up in arms! Their sheer unwillingness to pay such a ridiculously small price for something that literally took up my every day and every night, made me lose enthusiasm and passion for it VERY fast! And so, I eventually sold it to another local holistic magazine company.

v1.jpeg

v2.jpeg

v3.jpeg

That "little magazine" was a journey of NOTE for me! It taught me an enormous amount and also simultaneously SCREWED my perfect eyesight up for life haha! I worked almost 24 hour days for 2+ years with that brain child... on a monitor which was faulty and blurred in the centre of the screen - but I could not afford to replace it with a new one at the time, so I carried on as normal. A perfect lack of foresight in that instance, as my now prescription glasses cost a lot more than a new monitor then would have.... haha - live and learn hey ;)

The last "additional" venture I undertook over and above the running of my second design and print business from 2007 to Dec 2018 was not something I could keep in that bag, but was also a monumental venture and something that taught me and led me to where I am now. When selling the "vibrations" magazine I swore I would NEVER do that again... but I did haha... only the last time, I did it digitally. I launched "INSPIRE VIRTUAL MAG" and ran that man alone for 2 years as well. That was an utterly MAMMOTH task as it was a fully fledged international e-mag - 160+ pages and other than receiving content from writers, absolutely EVERYTHING else was done by little 'ol me. From editorial layout, advertisement design, compilation, promotion, clothes selections, fashion shoots - all of it.

Not to blow my trumpet or anything, but magazines as you and I all know them are compiled by huge teams of people - so needless to say... after 14 months of that I was feeling pretty damn exhausted haha!!! And as I mentioned, this was all done in between being completely hands on in my bread and butter business. That online magazine was TREMENDOUSLY well received and was read by both men and women across the globe - in fact I think about midway in that journey we were receiving read counts that exceeded 50k+ per issue... but again, when your passion for a project dies, so does the project - but nothing was lost. Many a lesson was gained. I am VERY much a gut driven individual and when I am done with something "energetically" - then I am done with it completely!

i1.jpeg

After that last stint, I shifted my focus completely back onto my "bread and butter" design and print business and then eventually handed that over to my shop manager at the beginning of 2018. I had been preparing to do it, and can honestly say... that my decision to completely drown myself into "creative endeavors" full time has not disappointed me yet... The markets, yes a little haha! I absolutely LOVE what I do with my day time hours now and I would not change it for the world! So... there it is - you got a little more than you bargained for when opening this post - but, I am known for talking too much haha!!!

I once had a conversation with my father, where he told me that he sat at a boardroom table with at least 12 men his age (65-75 yrs) and as very financially successful men they each shared a hilarious afternoon of reminiscing about their COUNTLESS failures in the road to getting where they currently stood. I will never forget that little bit of motivational converse. I may have failed a few times already, but what I haven't done even once yet... is give up.

Initially, I had no intention of doing anything other than writing and sharing my personal content when I returned to this space - but after having spent a little more time here again I began to feel a little differently. Helping content creators bring out their best was something I did as a community leader for many years here on Steemit as well as elsewhere - and seeing people flourish as content creators was probably one of the most rewarding feelings in the entire world. Confidence grew, shackles dropped, cares abandoned and the REAL PERSON hidden within so many people began to show and shine.

It was for this reason that I decided to reignite two of the initiatives I originally began in this space. At this point in time, I am merely utilising them to curate good content which I find, but I would ultimately like to grow them both into something much more - OR - start something new entirely. Nonetheless, that thought process is in infancy and I will play it all by ear (and gut).

However, during the time spent seeking out good content over the past couple of weeks, I have come to notice a few things - there is no shortage of people wanting to create content, there is a great portion of people trying to inspire quality content from contributors and there are also a good number of people trying to seek out that good content and share it with everyone else so that less people feel “lost at sea”. It is wonderful to see so many people working positively together.

I would like to step into that arena again too - but within my own rights.

I want to help writers, creatives and anyone else who seeks guidance… but I am going to say one thing, before I even go any further - lets call it my DISCLAIMER shall we… I do not have a full time job. Art is how I make my living now - and anyone who is an artist will know, that is no easy feat - So… My writing here also contributes toward keeping the roof over our head and putting food on the table. As will, ANY efforts I put into this community space. - everything will be 50/50 in terms of rewards, because time is money. It is as simple as that.

I worked for nothing for YEARS and at the end of it all, I was left with nothing but a bite out of my arse and a knife in my back. I will not do that again. If for “whatever” reason, my situation changes - and I am able to once again be a part of the “100% power up club”, then I will gladly do so - but for the foreseeable future, this is not the case - and to my mind and not unlike ANY other business or service the world over… compensation is a fair request for time and effort given.

I say the above with a little apprehension if I am honest… because the last time I tried to “grow” and “help” people in a space like this - I was met with nothing but bitter and greed filled resistance. I do hope this will be different. But I shall let the chips fall as they may. Response to this post will speak loudly enough, and I will be perfectly happy with whatever the outcome.

If it does not feel right and/or the response is not positive - I simply won’t go ahead with it, and I will just carry on writing for myself. No harm, no foul.

Regardless though - there are a few things which I have noticed along the way and I wanted to use this opportunity to give my ten cents. Before I begin, I would like to just add that everything I share / express now is done with a good heart and a positive intention, so I truly hope that nobody is offended by my expression.

I would like to start with…

“The Diary Game”

I have no idea who started this concept - it is a GREAT idea, but the one thing which smacks me in the face in the feed like a wet fish in the face is the TITLES!!!! It is really monotonous scrolling through a feed where my eyes are repeatedly hit with the words “THE DIARY GAME”. Not only does it make me skip past 90% of those posts, but it makes the entire feed look incredibly spammy.

Screenshot 2024-01-09 232130.png

People are visual creatures and many of us read from left to right. Our minds don’t always read an entire sentence when we are looking for something which interests us - this is why MEDIA are particularly careful about how they WORD things. A simple suggestion for this initiative would be to SWITCH the order of their titling. Allow the author to put their “title” first, and let the “#thediarygame” come last.

There are a few more pointers I would love to share with the person/people behind this initiative - but I will do that if we can connect directly.

—------------

The Language Barrier

When I first re-entered this space, I actually made the effort to translate entire posts which were in another language, simply because the visuals on the post had caught my attention and I wanted to know what the post was about…. But I have to be honest - that level of effort, when met with a “thanks for visiting” reply to my two paragraphs of enthusiasm, became long in the tooth very quickly - and understandably. I also did a few posts in English and Spanish initially too - but that did not really gain much traction lol.

Screenshot 2024-01-09 233346.png

My sister in law is Spanish - and she is one of the most energetic, passionate and enthusiastic individuals I know! There really is something magical about you latin ladies hehe! So when I look through this feed and I see so much Spanish I am like “aaaaah” - because I have no idea what the post is about - other than to look at the pictures - or to do the translation myself.

My suggestion? Perhaps we could ALL make more of an effort to add a translated version to at least some of our posts - which (even if it is bad language) would include an audience and community which we would never have had otherwise. I know I have referred only to Spanish by example - but my thought process and intention is certainly not limited in that respect. There are people from ALL over the world in this space, so adding something like that to one's posts should definitely be at personal discretion.

Make More Effort!

There are so many instances when I open a post because the title leads me to believe there will be something worth reading and then I am met with one picture and five lines about that picture. Even in the instance of art or photography I believe you can muster more than that. Posts like that seldom generate any traction, attention or longevity for the creator - so why even bother?! People were attracted to the thumbnail or the title… at least attempt to give them something to chew on… and if you are here for the rewards - unlikely you will get them that way anyway - so you may as well make more effort.

There is so much that can come from a little effort and authenticity. People WANT to connect - give them a reason to!

Give a SH!T about the people who make TIME for YOU.

Time is an asset and NOBODY likes it when another wastes theirs. When you write a post and someone takes the time to respond to you with genuine thought and attention - have the common courtesy to respond with more than two words. Use Google translate if language is an issue, but don't dismiss enthusiasm for your content. Again - you never know where your effort in response and engagement may lead. This is how friends are made. I realise this is becoming an increasingly foreign concept, lol.

—---------------------

With that all said and done - before I conclude this mammoth post, lol - I would like to share a few inspirations for fellow aspiring writers out there. No title requirements, no community obligations - only the reward of the efforts for what you choose to share. If even one person gets some inspiration from what I share below... then it was worth it! "Inspiration is everywhere when you open your mind". That is my "life line" :)

Moving along to those inspirations...

If you do make use of a picture or photo which is not yours, please be sure to properly credit the source, although - I think that for this kind of idea, it would be much more impactful if the picture was in fact your own.

Right, I think I have said enough lol! My intention here is only to inspire - and also to outline a little bit of what I would like to offer - in the hopes that my choice to remain on the 50/50 fence for the sake of survival, does not get me persecuted or burnt at the stake, lol.

There is a lot more where the above came from and I would LOVE to nurture it here.

Tagging people in posts is not something I have ever enjoyed doing, but I am going to do it at the end of this post because I am seeking genuine feedback. I don’t really know “who’s who” here anymore - so apologies if I have tagged you and you did not care to get involved in this “conversation”.

Right now, I love you so much! (I do, anyway, but you know...)

Yes, of course we can do better! And we can try to get out of the "safe little rut" a lot of people are stuck in...

The picture is much bigger than most people realize. Thriving communities grow out of more than a formulaic following of a format to catch a curator's eye — which is what I see a lot of here — they grow from being dynamic, and featuring content that draw people in from the outside. And I think you know what I mean.

But we both have extensive professional writing, publishing and editing experience... and 99.9% of the good folks here do not. So the challenge is convey why different facets of writing and publishing matter.

Tags in titles annoy me, for starters because they are not "hot," and thus have little bearing on content discovery. Wasted real estate...

I'm tired, and it's oh-dark-thirty in my corner of the world so I'm just going to re-Steem this and head to bed. Shortly. But I shall return.

xo

Right now, I love you so much! (I do, anyway, but you know...)

hahaha!!! and right back at ya @denmarkguy!

featuring content that draw people in from the outside. And I think you know what I mean.

BINGO!!!!! That was a large part of what I was trying to say actually... I know I tend to waffle a lot and I de-railed quite a bit in this thesis long post, lol - but that is exactly my point. Content needs to have substance and it needs to have something to offer the readers. Now, I am not trying to be rude or unkind, but I genuinely have NO interest in reading about peoples mundane daily tasks... some of which even include the mentioning of using the toilet and brushing teeth!!!! It is crazy that ANYBODY would think this is something that another person would want to read.

I know the intention is good and there is relative effort - but there is a great lack of understanding and personally, I think that is where the problem comes in.

People want to learn something, feel something, relate to something or be inspired or motivated. That is what the content should be about if it is EVER to appeal to a broader audience.

But we both have extensive professional writing, publishing and editing experience... and 99.9% of the good folks here do not. So the challenge is convey why different facets of writing and publishing matter.

Absolutely!!! I can recall countless people who used to produce content similar to what I mentioned above and with a little guidance and encouragement grew their content creation into something absolutely read-worthy over time.

Tags in titles annoy me, for starters because they are not "hot," and thus have little bearing on content discovery. Wasted real estate...

I agree with this wholeheartedly... and only suggested the swap as I know some of these "initiatives" will insist on the tag being in the title... but really speaking that should be left to the section literally holding its name.

I'm tired, and it's oh-dark-thirty in my corner of the world so I'm just going to re-Steem this and head to bed. Shortly. But I shall return.

Happy Hump day upon your return, lol!

Hi Jaynie,
Sorry, I didn't get a notification for your mention. I got to know about this post of yours through a resteem.
Well, I would agree with weisser-rabe on this:

So the way to go from my point of view is - just do it!

I'm really new to Steemit; now that I know, the time you've spent here is quite extensive. So I can't comment on what kind of dynamics and things you have witnessed and experienced here.

I do agree with most of your points and I think many other people also, whether they say it out loud or not, but then again my limited experience restricts me somehow to comment very thoroughly.

My stance whenever I participated in engagement challenges was to make something interesting out of these challenges. Bring my own colour and vibe to the challenge. But, well you can see my posts (if you have time- - which is a really precious commodity). Long story short, my posts didn't align with the rules.

You are professional writer/editor. You have a vision. Why not experiment with it and see how it goes.

Wish you all the luck!

Hey sweetheart! Thank you for stopping by to give your input, I appreciate it greatly!

HAHAHA!!! rules were made to be broken, weren't they?! :P I am not very good at following rules either... so definitely on the same page as you for that one! As for YOUR posts - honey, you have so much colour and energetic vibrancy oozing from you... it is impossible to ignore!

Don't ever change!

You are professional writer/editor. You have a vision. Why not experiment with it and see how it goes.

I think I may just do that :)

Much love beautiful soul!

To simply summarise: exactly! There are some users who repeat similar things like a prayer wheel and eventually lose interest. I sometimes catch myself doing this (but I'm the optimistic type - I don't give in that easily ;-))

So: I think we can hardly convince anyone of the content thing who doesn't want to be convinced. So the way to go from my point of view is - just do it! Without looking at who or what is offended by it. Headwinds are okay, ignorance is okay, the opposite is very welcome. In the end, we will see what brings more satisfaction in the long term. I'm optimistic about that too ;-))

So the way to go from my point of view is - just do it! Without looking at who or what is offended by it.

Well said @weisser-rabe!!! I was contemplating precisely that yesterday evening. So, yes - that is the intention, I would very much like to assist where I can - even if it is merely by offering up the information and/or guidance - if it get's used great, if not - no matter.

Headwinds are okay, ignorance is okay, the opposite is very welcome.

I like that!

I'm optimistic about that too ;-))

Always nice to connect with glass half-full individuals!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for giving your input - I value it greatly!

Hope you have a wonderful Thursday!

Dear Jaynie, it is a pleasure to visit your post and you maybe noticed that I have now re-steemed both of your posts, that is not something I regular do but both of the posts were very special.

You joined Steemit and your brought your special style and uniqueness. You might not notice yourself because that is probably normal you but it is very rare type of character of person that we come across here.

I like you analysis and your critical assessment of how we, here on Steemit live, especially considering that you came now when everything more or less working like it is now for quite a long time.

You pointed correctly, what we miss here is an interest and communication with each other, that means when we read posts we should reflect if we like it and of course, it is a courtesy to give an appropriate feedback. Often that fails. slowly many just accept it.

I see that you have very good comments and the users who are here very well known to their thorough reading and thoughtful comments. There are I would say many good users, like you say often language barrier makes it difficult but I must say I am glad that I came across many good friends who write in Spanish, maybe due to the work as Steemcurator.

Nevertheless, I am glad that you expressed your thoughts and I hope many users will see your post and change themselves. I must admit I often have no time for comments and also to write in time, like last night I had my night shift and from tomorrow on I have three long shifts in hospital those days I am unfortunately, not able to spend much time for Stemeit activities as I want but I am often able to read the posts and try to come back.

This post is worth a special mentioning for @steemcurator01 the Stemeit team may also like it like us.

Dear Jaynie, it is a pleasure to visit your post and you maybe noticed that I have now re-steemed both of your posts, that is not something I regular do but both of the posts were very special.

Thank you so much for that @stef1 I appreciate it more than you know!

You might not notice yourself because that is probably normal you but it is very rare type of character of person that we come across here.

What a lovely compliment @stef1!!! I do hope that as we head into the days, weeks and months ahead... that this will become more common place around here... it would be wonderful to see more people making a genuine effort.

it is a courtesy to give an appropriate feedback. Often that fails. slowly many just accept it.

I always think about it like this: How would I want to be treated? Would I be disappointed if someone clearly didn't read my post and just left some lame one liner in the comments? Of course I would! I think it is safe to say that anyone who put in relative effort would be saddened or disheartened by that... so, easy fix: give to others what you would like to receive yourself. It has a natural way of gravitating in your favor then :)

And I appreciate that you took the time from your clearly busy schedule to read what I had to write. That is priceless Stef. You need not justify anything... we all have our lives to get on with and IRL always takes priority. You do plenty aroundhere from what I can tell, and your content is ALWAYS enjoyable to read... so, dont stress yourself :)

Thank you again for everything!

Have yourself a beautiful week!

I think I've just read 10 posts and didn't bat an eye. I don't remember when it happened last time.

I joined this place almost 6 years ago and I wonder why I never came across your profile. Just by reading this thesis post , I feel great and hopeful.

In the capacity of your professional experience and knowledge of writing and editing, you could guide a lot of users towards better content creation.

It's one thing writing for yourself but content creation is another thing. It thrives on traction which comes with putting your readers first while penning down anything.

I totally agree with the issues you see here on Steem. The most off-putting for me are the mundane diary games with toilet routines and "thank you for visiting" to enthusiatic comments.

I think we have a lot to talk about. But I'm a little short on time at the moment. Will catchup later and looking forward to whatever you bring to the table.

Hi @event-horizon <3

Thank you so much for coming here to share your thoughts! My writing and expression would be worthless without feedback like yours!

Well, it is a pretty big ocean of fish, haha... so I guess totally understandable that we never crossed paths before - but we have now, so YAY to that :D

I really do hope to be able to at least inspire others to improve their skill set!

PRECISELY!!! People need to realise that the audience needs to be engaged. They have to be able to relate to what you are sharing and whilst we can all relate to going to the toile a few times a day, I am pretty sure this is not something we need be discussing haha!

Life first! Have a great week, and wonderful to connect!

For some reason I didn't see your post until today

I have read your entire post and thanks for sharing with us your reasons business.

What you bring up about suggestions for making good posts on steemit is great.

I hope many have read your post and got some ideas on how it can be done.

I have to admit myself that I don't take the time to add any words to my digital drawings.
But I spend a lot of time on the wox community behind the scenes.

You are a very skilled writer and provide great value to the steem community with your posts. It's great that you found your way back here again.

I have to admit, this is an extraordinary post. I read it in one sitting.

I really appreciate your intention to help, but I'm afraid you may be disappointed. From what I've seen, one of the biggest problems with Steemit is that almost no one reads anything here. This titanic work of yours went unnoticed by most authors. The absolute majority of people here came here to make money. They want to quickly write something and run away. Sometimes they find time to complain that they don't get enough votes.

Overall, your story is more than impressive. You know very well how to come up with a beautiful project. You have talent, talent and more talent. I will be happy to read your posts and learn from the master :)

Thank you @o1eh :) It wasn't a small read, so I thank you for that!! :)

Having been around the blockchain block for a little bit - I KNOW you are right, lol! It really is a sad state of affairs and honestly, I think the main reason is because of the monetary incentive... which is so backwards really... because if people had two brain cells to rub together... they would realise quickly that quality is what nurtures longevity AND reward.

But alas, yes... here we sit - thought I will say that, I am not really deterred by mountains. If the "handful of people" that DO read posts eventually grows into two handfuls - then that is better than nothing :)

I have one word to respond to that... HUMANS! haha! Fickle, shallow and forever after instant gratification. Cannot help that, unlikely it will ever change either... but, again I will say - there are some good seeds out there and they are worthy of being watered to my mind.

You are way too generous with your compliments - but I do thank you! VERY MUCH! I just have a passion for writing... always have, and it would be nice to see that passion stirred within a few others.

Creative writing can be a little bit like an addiction... and I hope that perhaps I can create a few more addicts around here :D

Thank you so much for taking your time to give your feedback on this - I REALLY do value it.

Hope you have an awesome week ahead xxx

Thank you so much @o1eh and @steemcurator04 - MUCH appreciated!

I love all the topic for blog's inspiration. But most of all i like About photo with 1000 words. Although i'm not sure i can count my words untill 1000 words but i like to try someday..i'm glad i find your post again, because I feel stuck recently with works and other things, sometimes it seems so hard to write something..

Thank you for the wonderful feedback @mytravelandscape. I appreciate it very much and yes - that is a fun post idea - in fact, I did it myself today :)

As for the counting of words - you can quite easily make use of the "word count" tool on google docs - or even easier... once you finished your writing... you can just google a free tool to do a word count for you.

Let me know how you get along! and if you need any assistance - just shout!

Thanks so much for the curation :) Much appreciated @durbisrodriguez
