Drawing in LuganosteemCreated with Sketch.

Drawing in Lugano – Pencil, ink, watercolor on paper – 3 x 5 inches.

Like many older cities in Europe, Lugano is a treasure house full of interesting things to draw. (Yes, in a way of looking at things, every thing is interesting to draw, but let’s have a look at architecture in this sketch.)

One morning, I was sitting in a piazza trying to draw tourists, but they moved too quickly, so when I searched for something more stable I discovered this part of a cornice of a building. The sketch took a patient 35 minutes and made me much more satisfied than my messy sketches of people.

I agree the old European cities offer such beautiful opportunities for drawing. When I see for example such decorated pillars or doors and windows, I am overwhelmed, just not knowing where to start. It seems that I need to do every single details but on other hand that would be too complex and probably as drawing not very interesting.

I love that sketch and your watercolour :)

Thank you again, stef1. I'm glad that you like the sketch. (As for drawing and sketching, a good rule of thumb to follow when you don't know where to start with a complex subject is: draw the big shapes first, then draw the middle-sized shapes next. Leave the details until last. I hope this tip helps you.)
