ABDICATION
Take me, oh eternal night, into your arms
And call me your child.
I am a king
Who willingly abandoned
My throne of dreams and weariness.
My sword, too heavy for weary arms,
I placed in strong, calm hands;
And my scepter and crown — I left them
In the antechamber, broken into pieces.
My chainmail, so useless,
My spurs, with such futile jingling,
I left upon the cold staircase.
I shed my royalty, body and soul,
And returned to the ancient, tranquil night
