Good morning, everyone :) I hope you are well :) Today, I woke up to a sunny day on the island. Another day of good mood :) I share with you a photograph of the city of Porto, with the traditional Rabelo boats on the Douro River. I studied in Porto and carry the city in my heart. The Rabelo boat is a typical vessel of the Douro River used to transport the barrels of Port Wine from the Douro, where the vineyards are located, to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine was stored and later commercialized.
As a mountain river boat, with a length between 19 and 23 meters, the Rabelo has no keel and a flat bottom, constructed with overlapping planks. With a square sail, the Rabelo was typically operated by six or seven men. As for the masts, the earlier ones used only one, while the later ones also used a mast at the bow. For steering, it used a long oar at the stern – the espadela. When necessary, the boats were pulled from towpaths by men or teams of oxen.
Currently, their activity is different, being used by tourists for cruises on the Douro River. I hope you like it :)
