The vast meadows and a river that flows on one side of the valley
Bungus Valley is one of the most pristine valleys we have in the Kashmir division. It is located in Kupwara district, the northernmost district of the division, at a distance of about 102–110 km from Srinagar and almost the same distance from Srinagar International Airport. It is one of the most beautiful, serene, and untouched valleys of our region.

The vast lush green meadows
The valley is believed to have one of the largest meadows in Kashmir, with a lush green appearance spread all over and surrounded by dense pine, alpine, and fir forests. These meadows are considered unique not only because of their appearance but also because of the feeling they offer, giving a natural carpet-like experience when walked over barefoot. The uniqueness of the valley lies not only in its beauty but also in its vastness. The meadows are so extensive that exploring the place fully in one or two days is impossible; one needs to stay for more than a week to explore it to some extent.

I stood in front of the camera to make memories of my visit
Located in the northern district of the division, very close to the Line of Control with Pakistan, the valley has limited access, which has helped it remain pristine, unexplored, and largely untouched with minimal human interference. It is situated at an altitude of about 10,000 feet above sea level and is one of the richest biodiversity spots in the region. Not only does it offer huge open plains and meadows to explore, but the journey to the valley itself is no less than an adventure. The road cuts through massive mountains and hills, and fortunately, proper road connectivity has already been provided up to the valley.

Due to its proximity to the Line of Control, permission from security forces is required to visit the place, and only after approval can one proceed further. The valley is divided into two parts, one larger than the other, known as Bada Bungus and Chhota Bungus respectively. It is one of the most beautiful places we have, and I recommend it to everyone visiting Kashmir, as witnessing such pristine and vast meadows is always a treat for the eyes, unmatched by any other place in the world.

Moving in from the entry point of the valley
The valley remains largely untouched, and for this reason, there is no permanent infrastructure or accommodation facilities available. As a result, most visitors return the same day. The place also offers a rich cultural experience, as communities involved in cattle rearing—mainly the Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes—stay here during the summer months. This allows visitors to witness aspects of their unique culture, which are rarely found elsewhere.

My friends and i enjoying the uniqueness of the place
Pony rides are available, offered by people from nearby areas who earn their livelihood through tourism. These pony rides are one of the best options to explore the valley to some extent within a single day. The area is rich in biodiversity, with wildflowers blooming during the summer season, and the adjoining forests are home to bears and other wildlife. Many medicinal herbs with high value grow here and are unique to this region.
The huge mountains surrounding the valley add further charm, and while moving from one part of the valley to another, the vastness of the meadows is truly intriguing. It makes one wonder about the skill of the Creator, as the valley feels like a living exhibition of divine art. Walking barefoot on the grass gives a natural carpet-like feeling, making the valley truly unique—an experience that cannot be found anywhere else.

Buffaloes being reared in these vast meadows
There are several routes leading to Bungus Valley, some being shorter routes from Handwara and others longer routes that offer breathtaking views of Kupwara district. When I visited the place, I was not only mesmerized by the beauty of the valley itself but also by the scenic route leading to it. It was a completely different experience. Before the visit, I had a different perception of the place, but traveling through those beautiful landscapes and forest-lined roads changed my view entirely. I feel proud to be part of this valley and to reside in a region that is far more beautiful than one can ever imagine or anticipate.
