MEASURE THE UNREACHABLE

Mathematics is a lot of fun and it becomes meaningful and memorable when it is applied to real-life situations. In their last performance task, I let them go out and each group will determine the height of a tall object without directly measuring it. By using their knowledge on trigonometric concepts, learners will develop problem-solving skills and they will be calculating the height of their chosen objects using a clinometer.

In this task, they will be observing a tall structure, it could be a building or the tallest tree in our school, measure a specific distance from its base, use an angle measuring tool which is their customized clinometer to determine the angle of elevation. They they will be calculating the unknown which is the height of their chosen object.

This performance task let us especially the students realize that Mathematics is not just all about textbooks but it is beyond. It is all about the world that surrounds us. Understanding angles of elevation give them confidence in solving practical problems creatively and efficiently. This activity builds confidence, develops curiosity and highlights the importance of Mathematics in our daily life and how will we apply it.
