The Night is the ugly and malevolent crone, the ogress, the stepmother who mistreats the young. It is the devouring wolf, the sack in which the girl is stolen, the grave where princes lie buried.

The Days are the longed-for children who take on monstrous forms; the victims of a vow; the abandoned infants, or those born under wondrous signs.

The Twilights, of morning and evening, are the twin brothers: the mistreated youths; the brother who kills or saves his kin.
