I am overusing the word "love".

in #life7 years ago

I have been using the word "love" way too much.

Is it just me?

I love my husband and son, I love my family and I love chocolate! But does chocolate belong in the same category as my family? Am I devaluing the word by using it for everything so that when I say it to someone I love, it doesn't have the same impact?

Maybe I should use different words when talking about the things I enjoy in life. Maybe I should say that chocolate delights me, I highly regard it or it appeals to me. Does that still get my point across while avoiding the overuse of "love"?

To say I love movies, books and food is probably an overstatement and in the wrong context. I really like those things, but I love my family.

I don't want "I love you" to lose its significance because I say that I love everything (and I am pretty easy to please and am delighted by so many things, so this is a problem for me).

This is kind of a hard habit to fix because we all say the word "love" for everything and we don't use all the synonyms we could be using instead.

Ideas for what to say when you really like something instead of saying "love":

  • I admire chocolate
  • I am crazy about chocolate
  • I am mad for chocolate
  • I am nuts about chocolate
  • I am serious about chocolate
  • I am wild about chocolate
  • I delight in chocolate
  • I flip over chocolate
  • I adore chocolate
  • I hold chocolate in high regard
  • I appreciate chocolate
  • I approve of chocolate
  • I prize chocolate
  • I take pleasure in chocolate
  • I think very highly of chocolate
  • I value chocolate
  • I care deeply about chocolate
  • I applaud chocolate
  • I relish in chocolate
  • I savor chocolate
  • I fancy chocolate
  • I am pleased by chocolate
  • I am contented by chocolate
  • I get a kick out of chocolate
  • I get high on chocolate
  • I indulge in chocolate
  • I enjoy chocolate
  • I take joy in chocolate
  • Chocolate appeals to me

I am going to try to stop dropping the word "love" around for everything and start saving it for when I really mean it. I love people! With all my heart, I love my family, and I want it to mean it as much as I feel it every time I say it!

And now that I have put the word "chocolate" in this post a million times, here are some pics of the chocolate cake I made this week:

Now go get some chocolate that you really like and tell someone special to you that you love them!

Blessings!

Someone really LOVES chocolate huh?

I delight in it quite a bit. 😁 Don't you?

Proudly. Chocolate here in Guatemala is bitter as hell and I have to accept I love sweet chocolate. I hope that in Honduras in a few weeks I can find not so bitter chocolate!

I am bitterly sorry. 😊
I hope you find the sweet stuff!

OMG I love chocolate that cake looks so good!
I have a habit of overusing the word love too!
I love this, I love that. It's a hard habit to break! I love all those words that you were able to use instead to describe chocolate! I need to use those more haha.

I gotta be honest, I had some of that cake with breakfast and it was scrumptious. 😊
Yes, I need to use those words more, too! I get lazy with my vocabulary sometimes and it simply won't do!

Words are spells; words have power. I suppose if you're going to overuse a word, "love" is a good word to overuse. But... there's also that idea that if we tell every single person in the world that they are "awesome," then "awesome" becomes "normal" and no longer awesome.

My wife and I use the term "precision of language" quite a lot... I feel that matters because we fall into patterns of using specific words as "filler" to have multitudes of meanings... love; awesome; peace; blessings.

I agree with you! "Precision of language" is in the book "The Giver." Is that what inspired you?

Yes, I remember that from "The Giver;" actually I think we picked it up after watching the movie. So yes, that's ultimately the inspiration!

That is one of my favorite books!
