Watch a film that focuses on marginalized or underrepresented communities.

Kaaka Muttai (Tamil)

Cinema has been resounding as the voice of the oppressed since its inception, and in that way, this film, Kakka Muttai, expresses the voice of the poor community who lived in the slum area of Chennai city.

Kaaka Muttai is a 2014 Tamil film written and directed by Manikandan. The film tells the story of two poor boys living in the slums of Chennai who yearn to eat pizza, an Italian dish eaten by the rich. The film premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2014. It was also selected for screening at film festivals in Rome, Italy, and Dubai.

What new perspective or culture did this movie introduce you to?

Even though it is set in a slum setting and poverty is the main reason for the development of the story, director M. Manikandan's Kaaka Muttai has this wonderful positivity. In a story that is less than two hours long, it explores many aspects of the situation and succeeds in presenting everything with depth and sarcasm.

This is actually a story of two brothers' desires. They call themselves Big Cuckoo Egg and Little Cuckoo Egg. The brothers, who stopped going to school, today earn something by selling coal. The film revolves around their desire to eat pizza at a recently opened pizza shop. The difficulties in fulfilling that desire are the main theme of this heart-warming cinema.

Were there any stereotypes challenged or broken in the film?

This film tells the story of two poor children from an undeveloped slum in Chennai, who yearn to taste their first pizza of their lives at a newly opened pizza spot in their neighbourhood. The two children, Chinna Kaaka Muttai and Periya Kaaka Muttai, played by Vignesh and Ramesh, deliver heart-warming performances with their wide eyes and infectious smiles. With their father in jail, the only source of income for the family comes from their mother, played by Aishwarya in her career-best role, who ekes out a living through tough means. She is helped by her children, who contribute by collecting coal scraps from freight trains to earn money from a nearby waste disposal shop, and her mother-in-law, who helps her with household chores.

In an emotional scene, the grandmother laments that since chicken eggs have become so expensive, the only nutritious food for the children is crow eggs. When the land where children drink crow eggs from a tree is sold to a real estate developer to make way for a pizza shop, they are confronted with the harsh reality of globalization. The pain that globalization is causing to a region's people

Which character's journey did you relate to the most?

All the characters, including the boys Ramesh and Vignesh, their mother, and the grandmother, have given amazing performances. There is no forced villain. There is not even a satire of how the poor live. But the film makes the viewers, whether they are upper class, lower class, or middle class, think a little bit. Aishwarya, Shanthimani, ‘Soodhu Kavvum’ Ramesh, Babu Antony, Krishnamoorthy, Joe Malluri, all help bring the film to life.

What’s one message from the film that stuck with you?

Director Manikandan portrays the cruel face of this fake rich-poor gap without any emotion and moves the audience deeply. He has definitely shone many times as a director. He is also the cinematographer. G.V. Prakash's music is impeccable. Kishore's editing is another strength.
