RE: Flying Turkeys

in #nature7 years ago

Life can be hard for a turkey! It's so neat that you are still seeing your turkeys and that you have a roost close to you. I had wild turkeys in my yard for the first time ever, a month or so ago. I'd like to see them back! Do you hear a lot of coyotes howling in the night? It's amazing how some wildlife can figure out how to live in the spaces between people!

Hi @haphazard-hstead! Yes, there is, what sounds like, a pack of them. I did think about this a fair bit and now I'm wondering if it might have been a racoon because the birds should have been protected in their regular roost. Something had to drive them to fly across open water to the island. I was shocked how high in the tree they went and how far they can actually fly. Remarkable! I agree about the flexibility to live alongside us. :)

Turkeys are a strong bird. They can fly a lot better than it looks like they can -- they just don't like to, lol. I bet a raccoon could stress a group of turkeys. They sure can tear up a place. I just picked all my Japanese persimmons because the raccoons were starting to climb into the tree and break branches -- just like a bear in an apple tree. ; )
