Flying Turkeys

in #nature7 years ago

Yeah, I'm not kidding! Something scared the flock of 30+ wild female hens just at dusk last night.

What ever it was that scared these birds out of their normal roost drove them to fly across 200 yards of open water to a small island. They then flew back but many of them stayed high up in the tree that they landed in for most of the night.

I suspect that the coyotes decided to hunt turkey

These birds are large and that was a fairly far distance for them to fly. They are looking very appealing to many other creatures, who view them as food.

I hope you enjoy the video. I posted it to my Youtube channel on Dec. 10th, 2017.

That is an unusual catch for you. How many people get to see wild turkeys flying in the nearly dark sky?
We all have now. Thanks to you and your vigilance for us.
The video and your explanation of what happened is very interesting.

Thank you @francisk!
I have never seen anything like it. They knew they were flying over water too. It's like they knew that if they roosted on the island, whatever was hunting them, wouldn't be able to get to them. Remarkable, I think. :)

Couldn't help but think of this WKRP episode when I saw the title of your post;

PS No turkeys were harmed during the production of this post.

Hahaha! "The turkeys are hitting the ground like bags of wet cement!"
Timeless clip...even funnier because I'm old enough to remember this episode, too and this is exactly what me husband and I said when we saw the turkeys catapulting themselves in the air. LOL! I have never seen anything like it.

Beautiful video! I love to see the female turkey running away, when i was in Morocco my father uncle has so much at his place, I was disturbing them, and they was shouting hhhhh, they was so much funny.

Thank you for your lovely comment @creativewoman. :)
Turkeys have a personality and I think that they are funny, too.
You and @progressivechef must be exhausted with the opening of your new bistro. Has it been really busy for you?

Hi my dear friend, yes am so busy, we have so much work, you know well that the beginning is so difficult, but all passed well, am so happy that the customers liked so much the food.

Hahaha! I love this gif @resteemia! Thank you!

Life can be hard for a turkey! It's so neat that you are still seeing your turkeys and that you have a roost close to you. I had wild turkeys in my yard for the first time ever, a month or so ago. I'd like to see them back! Do you hear a lot of coyotes howling in the night? It's amazing how some wildlife can figure out how to live in the spaces between people!

Hi @haphazard-hstead! Yes, there is, what sounds like, a pack of them. I did think about this a fair bit and now I'm wondering if it might have been a racoon because the birds should have been protected in their regular roost. Something had to drive them to fly across open water to the island. I was shocked how high in the tree they went and how far they can actually fly. Remarkable! I agree about the flexibility to live alongside us. :)

Turkeys are a strong bird. They can fly a lot better than it looks like they can -- they just don't like to, lol. I bet a raccoon could stress a group of turkeys. They sure can tear up a place. I just picked all my Japanese persimmons because the raccoons were starting to climb into the tree and break branches -- just like a bear in an apple tree. ; )

Turkeys can fly but not very high because of their weight. They are one of the most heavy birds.

Must've been chupacabra.

Hahaha! Yes, it must have been. ;)

Beautiful your post mam.i always follow your post..resteem it image !

Wonderful video creating @rebeccaryan. Look at these Turkeys. They are really innocent and awesome feathers. Need to protect them.
