White Silence
I think it might be hard to imagine for some how silent it is in the countryside of Finland during some winter days. When I walked away from the yard, towards the woods, first it was dead silent. I wasn't tuned into the right sensitivity after having all the noises of people talking and the children's movies playing inside. When I readjusted, I could hear faint sounds.
Snow crunching under my feet, distant sounds of cars on a bigger road, 15 kilometres away, the wind making a soft swooshing sound. If I stand very still, the big pine trees crackle a little when they sway in the wind. I walked under big power lines, which make an eery electronic noise, hard to describe. I was walking further to see if I could find any animals, there was a fox sighted around here yesterday by my dad so I was out to look for it. No luck. Only a few paw prints from earlier in the day, but it's been snowing so everything gets covered fast.
I hear a chirping sound, and see one little bird hopping around in the tall grass now covered with snow. It makes little swoops and jumps around. I guess he is hunting for food. It's the only animal I see on my walk, and I turn back home.

Quite similar to Canada, right now, where I am, except it's dark out, but tomorrow, it will be bright.
I always feel like Finland and Canada have a lot in common, I think I would like it there.
I think it gets colder and windier here, but I don't know, because I've never been there. I just assume shit because the weather here gets nasty in winter but every now and again we have these calm days that remind me of pictures of northern Europe.
We have hockey in common. The junior tournament starts tomorrow. Finland usually has a good team, but so quiet on the ice, whereas Canadians are loud and rowdy.
Well it depends on the day and where you are, but Finland is flatter and maybe a bit milder I would think. It does get nasty in here too, but most of the time it’s just a matter of dressing accordingly and you’ll be fine.
Canadians loud and rowdy, wouldn’t have guessed that! Are you planning on going to any games?
Does it go down to -40 there? That's what we get in the flatlands here. Almost like living in the arctic. I'm near the middle of the country. To the east and west is usually a lot nicer in winter. Summers here are superior.
I won't be attending, just watching. Canada is the host country, but the games are played thousands of kilometers away on the west coast this year. ... I love hockey.
I'm in the middle of Finland and I think on some rare occasion it goes down to -40 up in the north. But for us here, a good winter weather is something around -20.
I used to watch hockey but not so much anymore, get's boring after a while.
-20 is nice. It's about that here, now. My feet are frozen though. Just did some drunken pond hockey for the past while. That got boring... we lost the puck.
We have a very mild -1 today, but I’m hoping for more -20 so the lake I live by freezes properly. It has a 1,5 kilometre icescating route every winter and I like to scate, sans puck and hockey stick.
Poor boy, you need a puck and a pair of wool socks.
Here in Russia almost the same picture!

We are close :)
I love the sounds of winter. I don’t hear them much now where I live in Japan, but I used to hear them a lot in the low mountains and countryside of Upstate New York. Thanks for the reminder.
You have to go up in the mountains in Japan, there is snow in there right?
Yeah, there is a ton of snow in the mountains. Sometimes I go skiing, but it’s not the same as snowshoeing in the back country, or spending a weekend at a house in the middle of nowhere.
I’ll put it on my list of things to do in the new year.
You know I've never been snowshoeing, I always just trample around in the deep snow 😅
Honestly, that’s what snowshoeing is, trampling around in the snow with big things strapped to your feet;-)
They do help you walk a bit though.
But I guess they help you not to fall waist deep in the snow, which is something I did last year when there was soooooo much snow. a Couple times I had trouble getting up while holding the camera at the same time.
They do keep you from sinking up to your waist, that’s true.
creepy.
And even more wonderful how the fuck animals and plants manage to survive that without heating oil and supermarkets.
Not creepy, beautiful and peaceful!
I guess we could survive too, but we'd have to kill all the animals for their fur and meat.
I love you scenes of snow and cold. We didn't get much yet where I am in the US. But don't worry, we'll get plenty before the winter is over.
Enjoy your natural beauty.
This an awesome post! really enjoy the pictures ! But living in a so cold enviroment has to be difficult !
