Dancing to an Empty Square - Do We Keep Doing Our Thing When No One's Looking?

in #photography6 years ago

What if you pour your heart and soul into something, and no one cares?

This guy was blasting industrial electronica out of an 80s style boom-box and dancing "the robot" in a performance that was equal parts mime and performance art.

The "Duck Tour" floating bus went buy without comment, and even the girl selling Italian Ice at the Slush King seemed more aggravated than entertained.

I felt for the guy.

I really did. It had to feel a bit like constructing an elaborate post on Steemit, something you just know is going to garner the votes and admiration of countless readers, and then discovering that the audience just isn't all that into you, after all.

It was probably worse for him. I can write my posts in the anonymity of my comfortable office. He's the one out there sweating in 90 degree heat, all too aware that the sidewalk around him suddenly has the lowest population density of any place in the city.

At least if someone laughed in his face, it would have been feedback.

That's why I don't just feel for him. I respect him. Why not? It takes courage to get out there and do something like this. It takes even more courage to keep on doing it, when nobody else thinks it's worth doing.

Let's check out that first picture again:

What's that? On the left? A tourist with a cell phone camera? A camera that's pointed at him?

An audience of one.

Sometimes that's all it takes. It's another sentiment I'm familiar with. One thoughtful comment, one tiny vote - though in truth the comment always means a lot more than the vote. A sign that this one crazy thing might be worth doing a bit longer. That it made someone think, and react.

So let's keep trying and see what comes of it. Let's explore.

I've always felt that the best art was outsider art, stuff made by impassioned weirdos who created solely for the mad pleasures of their own vision, who made things or did things because they couldn't not make or do them. The true outsider artist will write or dance or paint even if no one reads or watches or looks at his work.

But an audience is nice too. And sometimes one other person is the best audience of all.

You've got quite an audience here on Steemit, Winston :).
So keep arting ^_^.

AHAHAH! I don't feel at all for that guy. He loves it and I appreciate it.
He does it because he expresses himself doing it.
I have done all sort of things in the street. I go out with toys, wigs, cosplay costumes. I recently recorded a video where I just dress up and walk around and a guy is behind me recording. People stare.
I don't care.
Drinking in the street, singing and dancing. It makes me feel happy. I once dressed up as snow white and took a fish foot massage and plenty of people watched me.
I appreciate shared happiness. It is not even art, it is rebellion!

I like your description of outsider art. I thought about not posting anymore, but I'd still be writing, so why not continue posting it? You have a nice photographic diary on here, and I imagine there are many like me that don't comment all the time but are looking.

The hearts of the people are fickle and opinionated. Why ever create for the masses for fame alone? It is far better to pander to your own heart when you are creating. At least that way you enjoy the learning experience of honing your craft.

It's probably because you are a 'city man' without enough time to comment and chat back with others like when you were a leisured class lay about ;) But, hey, I'm still reading you :)

Me tooo, me too...we are your loyal fans, you can also dance and Donna and I will pay attention for sure :)
And two of us mace a crowd @winstonalden :)))

It's a crowd I'm happy to be in!

Donna has seen me dance once or twice. That's enough suffering to spread around in one lifetime.

Hahahah, don't be so cruel to yourself, not everyone is Fred Astaire :)

Hey, audience of one, huh? But she does look cute. Maybe he gets lucky.

You should write a story about it!

I think being ignored is one of the worst things that can happen when you do what you do. The idea that what you're doing is utterly meaningless is just so sad.
But yes, I suppose you do power through - so many people powered through until someone saw them...

I do wonder, though, how many artists out there make what they make because they want to entertain themselves, and can't find what they're looking for made by anybody else. Is the work meaningless if they, themselves, enjoyed it?

In business, they say you have to "pay yourself first." Because, if you're not making a profit, the business is not sustainable. Maybe in the arts we should say, "please yourself first."

A very wonderful article, my friend
