Entertaining Kids on Lockdown: Terrible Toadstool Pizzas!
Lockdown. Its dull. More so if you are a kid trapped in a house with parents who are constantly whining about not being able to get as drunk as they want as often as they want because of responsibilities.
And so we must find ways of entertaining our little cherubs.
I took it upon myself to cook with my daughter today.
She loved these but then the big hitter came.
We all know kids love pizza and so we embarked upon making some fun pizza. How do you make pizza even more fun that it is? Make it terrible!
So, here we are - Terrible Toadstool Pizzas. A magic little recipe from the Gruffalo's Cookbook. It's not mine but if you are bored and don't own it then please, join in with some lockdown cookery.
Here we go!
You will need
For the pizza base
200 grams of plain flour
1 tablespoon of olive oil
120 mls warm water
1 teaspoon of oregano
2 teaspoons of baking powder
A pinch of salt
For the tomato sauce
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
2 tablespoons of hot water
To make
Get your oven on at 200 degrees.
Throw the ingredients for the pizza base together into a dough. Because this recipe doesn't use yeast there is no need to knead or rest it.
So you can get straight to rolling it out into shapes. Roll it flat

Then find a circle cutter of some description. I just use whatever is to hand. Usually an upturned glass.

Then the fun bit. Get your kid to join in, careful with the knife though!
Cut out a stalk on each disc like so

Place them all on a baking tray
Now mix your tomato paste and water to make a tomato sauce and spread this with the back of a spoon over the tops of the toadstools
Add little balls of mozzarella to each one for the spots

Can you see the toadstool'ness!!!
Now fling them in the oven for twelve minutes.
Serve them up as part of your kids feast!!!

And make sure to have a nibble of some of the tasty blighters yourself!!!
I guess lockdown ain't all bad!!! :0)

The Gruffalo is popular at my library when we aren't closed due to pandemic panic. I don't think our branch has the cookbook, though.
Today, I hauled the last of my homemade calzones out of the freezer around noon. I will need to replenish my supply. Alas and alack.
It's quite a fun cookbook for kids. The gruffalo brain bread is quite good. Well need to see if I have a pic
I've never made a calzone! I really should as I have made my own pizza loads of times. I presume you just fold it over and crimp it a bit?
Basically. I made a crust around 8" (20cm) in diameter, spread sauce and toppings across one side with a bit of a gap for sealing it, and then folded the other half over. I rolled/crimped the edge and it stayed pretty well sealed.
That is quite creative! Good to see your inner Martha Stewart show thru a bit 😁
You gotta have a bit of inner Martha!!
