Increasing My Speed

in #running4 years ago

Hi runners of Steemit! Now that the winter months have finally settled in and it's getting too cold to go outside and run (for me at least) I've been using the indoor track at my gym. To be perfectly honest, running 0.1 mile after 0.1 mile lap is quite monotonous, especially for long distances over 10 miles. So I figure that this winter season, for the first time ever, I will be focusing on speed. I'm happy to report that within the first week I've already shaved this season's 5k time down from 29'40" to 28'52" and hoping to set some good PRs this year. May not make it quite to getting any 10k PRs in because it'll be quite difficult to motivate myself to run 62 laps on a track.

Hope that you guys are getting some good runs in during the winter months, if you're in the northern hemisphere!

Nice one @blackflame23 you're making good progress already, so look forward to hearing more.

Have you considered Interval Cardio? That might give your speed a boost.

Yeah, I just started incorporating some of that with different intervals of a steady jog and faster running. I think it'll help push my limits at least

If it's available, Dance Dance Revolution/Pump It Up can be a good way to break the monotony of interval cardio. Granted, it requires rhythm and eye-foot coordination, but...

Here's video of me that @timcliff recorded a couple years ago. This song is Utopia, and this is a level 7 chart. For reference, charts start at 1 and go up to 28:

Songs go for about 1:40 or so, and you usually get about a minute to rest after each song. So, in a sense, it's one of the best hidden interval cardio solutions out there.

Psyched to hear about your training. There are some really good resources on Steem for talking about training and improvement. Specifically -- give @run.vince.run or @toofasteddie a shout, and pick their brains!

They always have some good tips!

See you around!

I can imagine a track can get boring. I am fortunate that I can run outside pretty much all year. Improving your speed can motivate you. Do you run intervals? I find that really helps and it adds variety. You can mix it up with different combinations. I tend to listen to podcasts when I run and that helps the time past whilst entertaining me.
