I do another drunk guilt run after midnight

in #running2 hours ago

I don't do this very often and I don't encourage anyone else to ever do them but every now and then I kind of go back on my usual discipline and will have some sort of blowout day where I eat trash food and drink a ton of beers like I am still in college or something.

Every now and then I feel so guilty about this behavior when I do finally get home that I feel like my running shoes are calling to me like the Green Goblin's mask did in the Spiderman universe. One of those nights was over this weekend and well, I got the work done but with a rather terrible pace that kind of showcases how unprepared for exercise someone who is legally drunk actually is.

The thing about my drunk runs is that I have absolute confidence while I am doing them and I am not really a person who is unsafe about almost anything in my life so I went to a running track that is off the roads and nobody is on that thing after midnight anyway. But my tunes were roaring and giving me the strength and I actually went a fair bit further than I set out to do.

Lately I have been kind of working towards being able to run distance at just below 7 mins per km so averaging 9 min 13 per km certainly isn't a good pace but at least some of this has to do with the fact that I forgot to turn the watch off after I was finished and 28 minutes of standing around got factored into the entire thing.

For the first 3 km or so I was actually doing quite well but by km 4 it was time for a walk but it is so cold where I live that I wasn't able to stand around for very long and then running again became necessary. I brought a bunch of water with me and the idea here wasn't just to burn some calories of the night's excesses out, but also to get some sort of detox and reintroduction of non alcohol containing fluids in me. Does it work? Probably not, but I did it anyway because I am stubborn.

I did also find out something that is likely pretty obvious to most people and that is that my heart rate was made high pretty easily and because as a lot of people say "running is a mental game" my mind was not committed to the pain and I ended up stopping to walk several times. The bit at the end where the heart rate is totally down was me already back in my apartment quickly getting my wet and freezing clothes off of me.

Here is one thing that was pretty cool though, even though I was hydrating during most of the run I still managed to sweat out nearly 3 lbs of water-weight which of course was immediately replaced by a zero calorie isotonic drink and copious amounts of water.

I don't think this is a good idea but I so silly things every now and then. You could fall and seriously hurt yourself doing this and this is why I do it on a trail that I am very familiar with, with no one else around, and all of it is flat and well-lit. I laugh about it after the fact but my 1 hour of exercise that burned 721 calories doesn't come anywhere near the amount of calories that I put into my system during that day of frivolity.

I probably do these 2 or 3 times a month because I feel bad when I deviate from my otherwise mostly responsible lifetstyle. I will say this... the hangover was not as bad the next day as I feel it would have been had I not done this, so maybe it does have a purpose other than silly pride after all.
