$8.86 Million Dollars Can't Hurt

Well, it was only a matter of time before we found ourselves caught in the whole college admissions scandal , given how much value we place on a brand-name education.

Rules for thee, not for me

Probably, the most aggravating thing about this case for me is that the girl in question was going around preaching how she got into Stanford on her own merit. That video did not age well.

There were also interviews given by her billionaire parents where they said they don't give their children any advantage in life. Their children have to earn their privileges and money. Clearly this has been proven to be more bullshit.

The money only went to the wrong pocket

The mother still has the temerity to complain that they are the 'victims' in this case. She had believed that the US $6.5M was to be a donation to Stanford directly. Would that have made things any better?

My own experience in university - we had a couple of rich kids and children of ministers from foreign countries who were some of the dumbest door knobs around. Yet they miraculously made it to a competitive course where they barely passed. After which some bummed around on parent cash while those who decided to look for a job secured hard to get positions in Investment banks and tech unicorns.

World View

If there's anything these scandals have highlighted for me, it is that the world is anything but meritocratic. Money and connections matter no matter how we try to emphasize hard work and grit. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Sort:

Probably only a small percentages of all the scandals in the world will be known! Too much husstling going around on all levels and all over the world :(

So true, Peter. So much corruption around.

I don't see what's the big deal here.

Sure, they bought it, sure they were selling bs to the public, but I thought that's common knowledge (and practice) - rich parents putting their kids in prestigious schools (and jobs). I'm more surprised that this specific case made the news.

Indeed, btb. It's common knowledge that the rich game the system. I suppose what's different about this case was how they didn't go the usual route of donating to the university directly but instead cheated and tried to make it look legitimate.

In doing so, what they did became illegal (fraud) but i suppose it also causes outrage because these rich kids raise the bar for everyone by cheating this way. Requiring good grades as well as a portfolio of community service and extra-curriculars leaves for very little down time and exploration of self-interests.

Lol, in any case i'm sure the billionaires won't face any penalties. The 'low level rich' hollywood actress might.
