I was not serious from the start actually. More seriously, how a star ends depends on its mass. White dwarfs and black holes are two possible ends, as neutron stars are too. According to the mass of the star, you will get one or the other.
Ufff.. Glad to know what documentaries taught me since I was a child wasn't BS :D
