A visit to Street Market Purchase

Street markets or roadside markets are a very common occurrence in our country, where you can purchase many necessary items without even going to a large shopping mall. Respecting the contest topic, I visited a roadside coconut stall. I bought a coconut from this shop and shared the experience.

This shop is located at the very last corner of the footpath opposite Agrabad Lucky Plaza Market. These types of shops do not have exact opening and closing times; the owners sell according to their own convenience. As far as I can tell, it remains open every day of the week.

My proof of visiting card

This shop has no separate nameplate or fancy decoration. The owner is a middle-aged man running it from a small hut or shack by the street. The shop has no formal structure. The business was being conducted by simply keeping products under a tarpaulin.

Coconuts were on one side of the shop, and on the other side, the owner was selling some chips, cigarettes, betel leaf and other local items on a small table. Customers can enjoy tea here if they wish, though since the tea is brought from home in a flask, it might not be to everyone's liking.

I visited to buy a coconut. You can either buy a whole coconut to take home or drink it right there. There is a young boy at the shop to cut the coconuts, who processes them according to the customer's preference; I believe he is a member of the owner's family.

There were many coconuts in the shop. Some were hanging, while others were kept on the floor. The hanging coconuts were placed that way to attract customers from a distance, just as I noticed them from the highway at the corner of the roadside and came to visit.

I checked thoroughly and selected a coconut before purchasing. The price was determined by the size; I chose a tender one because they contain more water. Then came the bargaining; when I asked the price, the shopkeeper initially asked for 150 BDT, which was high for that size.

I bargained and first offered 120 BDT. The fair price for a coconut of this size is usually 110–120 BDT, but since the heat has increased significantly, the demand for coconut water for relief is very high, and shopkeepers try to hike prices taking advantage of this. After some bargaining, the price was fixed at 130 BDT.

Carrying it home whole was a hassle, and I might not have been able to cut it as perfectly as the shopkeeper, so I decided to have the water cut out there. The young seller started cutting the coconut with a machete, and I tried to film the whole process.

After cutting the coconut, the water is packed in a clean polybag. To ensure it doesn't leak, it is protected with another polybag on top, and the shopkeeper himself reminded me to take the coconut meat, as the white meat inside is very delicious.

The meat was scooped out with a spoon and put into the polybag with the water. I liked this behavior of the shopkeeper very much. I then paid for the coconut and left the shop. There is no digital payment system here. I was also given a straw so that the water could be drunk directly from the bag.

✓ Tell us why you chose that street or open market

While traveling for some work in the city, I had to pass by the Agrabad street market. I was feeling very hot due to the intense sun, and as soon as I saw the coconut shop a little further away, I visited it because is one of the busiest street market in the city and my visit to this street stall was random.

✓ The price of the item you purchased from the street or the open market

I bought a tender coconut from this shop. Coconuts with hard inner shells are also available, but since I was looking for water, I chose a tender one. After a bit of bargaining, the price was 130 BDT/18.5 STEEM, and its size can be considered moderately large.

✓ Describe your shopping experience, including pricing, bargaining, and product quality

The coconut water was very delicious, which I tasted after returning home, so there are no complaints regarding the quality. The price was a bit high; usually, the price for this size is lower, but the price has been kept high due to the recent demand in the heat. I didn't have to bargain much; he agreed to my price on the first attempt.

✓ In some places street or open markets usually cause traffic describe how busy the street or open market is

Yes, traffic jams are largely caused by these street or open markets. These shops are managed by non-professional people who do not follow rules and regulations; even if the authorities guide or warn them, they do not listen. Consequently, they occupy roads and even highways to set up stalls, leading to traffic congestion.

✓ What is your advice to the street or open market sellers to improve business performance?

Firstly, I would say that these street markets must conduct their business following the rules; they should consider whether the general public is facing problems because of them. Secondly, the behavior of these types of shopkeepers is often not good, which discourages moderate customers from visiting. Lastly, they should refrain from conducting business dishonestly.

Review:
"Street Coconut Shop, Agrabad" sells a lot of coconuts and its seems coconut water is well cherish over there because here most people don't make use of the water. You're right, and most time you can't blame the storekeeper who sell coconut especially the ones that do climb up to bring the coconut down.
