New year celebration 2026

Tuesday, the 14th of April, was a very special day for us. It is the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day, and it is full of beautiful traditions and customs. We were very excited to celebrate this day with our families.

The non-auspicious time started at around 3 a.m. Because of that, we stopped all our work on the previous night. We stayed calm and waited until the New Year time arrived. Since we had already prepared many sweetmeats and food items, we did not make breakfast that morning.

After the New Year dawn, we started our traditional activities. Then we continued with other customs step by step.

After finishing the customs at home, we went to Kalana’s house. All his family members were there, and everyone had gathered together to celebrate the new year. It was a very happy and memorable time. There were smiles, laughter, and lots of talking.

At Kalana’s house, I helped by preparing lunch for everyone. I was happy to cook and serve food for them. We all had lunch together and enjoyed the meal very much.

Before we left, we gave the presents we had bought for our parents. They were very happy and thankful. It was a lovely moment filled with love and respect.

In the evening, we came back home feeling happy and satisfied. It was truly a beautiful New Year day. I thoroughly believe that these customs add validity to our lives.
