Tech Blog #247 | Nothing Phone (4a) : Nothing is Playing Safe with Design..

The Nothing Phone (4a) continues Nothing’s strategy of making mid-range phones that feel visually different from everything else. The device keeps the brand’s signature transparent design, but the biggest change is the new #Glyph Bar on the back. Instead of the older segmented Glyph lights, this model uses 6 LEDs arranged in multiple zones that light up for notifications, timers, calls, and charging status. It gives the phone a distinctive look without being too distracting, and it remains one of the few design ideas in smartphones that actually feels unique rather than just cosmetic.

Up front, the phone features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 1224 × 2720 resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The panel supports HDR10+ and Ultra HDR images, with brightness reaching up to 1600 nits in high-brightness mode and 4500 nits peak. Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, the display is large, bright and sharp enough for media consumption, gaming, and everyday scrolling.

Inside, the device runs on the #Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset built on a 4 nm process, paired with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It ships with #Android 16 and Nothing OS 4.1, and Nothing promises up to three major Android updates. Performance should be comfortably mid-range. It is capable of smooth multitasking, casual gaming and everyday usage without pushing into flagship territory.

The camera setup is more ambitious than earlier “a” models. The triple rear camera system includes a 50 MP main sensor with OIS, a 50 MP periscope telephoto lens with 3.5× optical zoom, and an 8 MP ultrawide camera. This is the first time a base Nothing A-series phone gets a periscope zoom lens, which should help with long-distance shots. On the front, there is a 32 MP selfie camera, while video recording goes up to 4K at 30 fps with stabilization.

Battery life should be solid thanks to the 5080 mAh battery with 50 W wired charging, which can reach around 50 percent in about 22 minutes and a full charge in roughly an hour. Connectivity includes 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and NFC, and the device also carries IP64 dust and splash resistance.

Overall, the Nothing Phone (4a) looks like a confident mid-range upgrade rather than just a spec refresh. You get a large, bright display, a capable Snapdragon chip, a surprisingly advanced camera system with periscope zoom, and the clean, minimal Nothing OS experience. But as always with Nothing, the biggest selling point remains the design. The transparent back and Glyph lighting still make it one of the most recognizable phones in the entire mid-range market.
