Re-posting your blog posts - Steemit ethics

in #steem8 years ago

I'm sure many of us have worked hard on blog posts, yet see it lost into the void. Few steemers every got their eyeballs on it, let alone read it. Coming from Reddit, it's a tall order to make the frontpage of subs, but there's always an audience. Because of the nascent state of Steemit, with few users, not every post will be read.

I have always advocated against re-posting. But I'm wondering - whether it might be worth reposting on Steemit? Not now, but some time in the near future. For example, I wrote an article about astronomy, and at this point there's simply a very small audience for this subject.

As Steemit grows and a niche builds up for people interested in astronomy, is it OK to repost? Because they would have never seen the article.

Alternatively, is it OK to repost the next day? The next week? If it's a post you spend days on and think is very interesting, yet got lost into the void.

What do steemers think? Is it ethically incorrect to re-post? To re-post or not to re-post? That is the question.

Sort:

It's definetely borderline. I wouldn't say unethical, but I think that these kind of articles would be less valuable. But still...at the moment Steemit is quite dispersive, and reposting could be useful.

I only ever read reddit, but I'd think that it's fine to re-post when you're giving full disclosure about why, readers appreciate that. That being said, it's completely permissible to re-post every day, but I would warn someone that their reputation would walk off a cliff.

We're all finally free to do as we wish, here on Steemit. Some will definitely walk off that cliff, but others who re-post with full disclosure/taste could see a whole new conversation with a whole new audience, and a legit financial reward for generating the discourse.

Absolutely, there's gotta be a disclosure about it being a re-post. Every day is of course not acceptable. But on a fast growing platform like Steemit, a month might be fine.

This is exactly what I was thinking about , should recycle my old blogger posts and re-post it on steemit?

That's a good question. I say yes to that - just make it clear that it's an old post. Not all content need to be original, but of course the original ones will be most rewarded.

Maybe pick out some you feel are special in some way or you are really proud of. I think content creators need to develope new material that fits the platform.

Absolutely. On Reddit and Wordpress, I posted a lot about niche topics which simply don't have an audience here. So I'm focusing on things that Steemers currently care about.

Nevertheless, many posts are still lost into the void. So I wonder, what's an acceptable time before you repost?

Not sure really but as the platform grows, there's probably room for reposts especially if it's good and it didn't receive the exposure it deserved.

I agree with you. Perhaps not right away, but it might be good for the community if we re-post material once the platform matures.

There should be new content as well, but I think repurposing content is very helpful for content creators. It gives them more time so that they can focus on other aspects of content creation like learning new things and improving the business side of things.

Also, as liberosist mentioned, sometimes you put in a lot of work in an article and want it to have the maximum impact. So reposting on different platforms helps you reach the most amount of people and have the greatest impact. :)

But I see what you mean and agree that novelty is also important. :)

Every post is special and has a message, and if these posts do not get enough exposure what's the point in posting in the first place.

Thanks, good post

This Steemit writer had a really good article talking about repurposing old blog content. I recommend it.

I have decided to start migrating my old blog content to Steemit, because it just makes practical sense to me. Steemit is better. Just make sure the content is relevant and not outdated material. :)

Great question. I heard someone advise that you should post your content on Steemit first and then your other platform to avoid trouble. This would indicate that you haven't plagiarised the content. Either you have reposted it elsewhere or someone stole your stuff.

But then there could be the opposite problem - what if the other platform has a problem with plagiarism and they see your content on Steemit first?

I guess, either way, it helps to have the same display name on both platforms. And if you're a popular content creator, then it also probably helps to have some proof on Steemit to demonstrate that it's you.

For example, having a post on your Steemit blog with your pic that has Steemit + the current date on it. Or if you're a blogger, having a post on your non-Steemit blog telling people about your Steemit presence. :)

Recycling our old blog posts is crucial to send our message across, what’s new is just as important as what’s old. Someone could be missing out on very important information if old blogs don’t get enough exposure.

I do it on Facebook in groups. I always brand them reposts though. Newer members always appreciate it :)

I think this is a great way but I don't use Facebook .

I haven't used it a lot since I found Steemit. That's my confession for today lol

I was wondering the same thing as I joined Steemit today and the only content I have is from my blog. I do have a few entries written for a book I started writing last year but haven't published yet. I am a writer who is just beginning to look into getting my stuff published for pay and I know with that companies are mostly looking for unpublished material.

Hi! This post has a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 4.4 and reading ease of 84%. This puts the writing level on par with Ernest Hemingway and Donald Trump.
