After nearly 4 years the Steem DAO has been reactivated for funding development on Steem.

Making the DAO breakthrough is @the-gorilla's proposal to modernise the steemit.com interface.

1. The Gorilla Unlocks the DAO

After almost 4 years in hibernation, the development funds in the Steem DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) have been unlocked by @the-gorilla's proposal to modernise the Steemit.com interface.

A major push across the community attracted sufficient votes to get the proposal above @gtg's return proposal to allow funds to flow again.

The Return Proposal has been in place since the DAO was first launched to regulate which proposals got funded, but it was escalated in size by the very large Tron backed @dev365 vote at the time of the Steem / Hive split to prevent Hive witnesses and developers extracting money.

With the help of the major votes from @upvu.proxy and @rme (accounting together for 57.5% of the votes) @the-gorilla's proposal today surpassed the 43M SP of the Return Proposal, and will now begin receiving daily funding.

@the-gorilla has already been doing a number of smaller developments on Steem including a Club Status checker. His new DAO funded proposal will involve a major modernisation of the steemit.com interface.

He plans to report regularly on progress and involve the community throughout the year long development to give suggestions and feedback on each stage of the process....

2. A Rebirth of Steem Development ?

The total funds in the Steem DAO (SPS) currently stand at almost 4.2M SBD (US$ 17M).

The DAO is designed to be able to pay out a maximum of 1% of the fund each day. That means after @the-gorilla's 30 SBD there remains over 41K SBD (US$ 170K) per day for other projects.

This amount of money could bring in a major rebirth of development activity on the Steem blockchain.

It will be crucial that new proposals for DAO funding are scrutinised carefully and once funded, monitored constantly to avoid the abuse of the system that took place on Steem in the past, and on Hive more recently.

Coming up with a suitable framework and process that will be acceptable to all will be difficult. The witnesses will likely play a key role in that.

One possible use of some portion of the DAO funds is some form of Inflation Reduction Proposal that would involve sending SBD to the @null burning account.

That will involve some complex economic analysis to determine the potential impact on the STEEM and SBD prices, and the investment attractiveness of the platform.
