Community Brainstorming: What is Steem's biggest strength?steemCreated with Sketch.

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

We've got all this combined brain-power inside our community of Steemians, but I don't think we're using it optimally yet.

Let's change this!

Question: What is Steem's biggest strength?

  • What makes Steem unique in contrast to other projects?
  • What will keep Steem attractive for users, developers & entrepreneurs (existing as well as new ones) in comparison to other blockchains?
  • Why are you here and not somewhere else?

The goal with this question is to find out what we (as a decentralised community) should focus on to make sure Steem becomes a huge success in the future.

I'm going to curate great answers and would like to invite everyone to do the same.

Looking forward to the brain-power contributions!

An under-rated asset of Steem is that we have a SteemIt.com as a front door.
Hang on.. I know that sounds like crazy talk, because everyone hates the UI.
However, if I decide I am interested in using Tron.. I don't know where to go and what to do. Which wallet can I trust? Where can I connect with the community.

In the early days of Steem we did something amazing. We brought a bunch of non-crypto users to Steem and taught them how to earn, transfer, sell and hold crypto. That is an asset that most have forgotten about.

We have a "front door" or a "landing page" While our community is our biggest asset, we sometimes forget how we cultivated that asset.

I agree it's a big strength to have a "landing page" for newcomers to get into the blockchain. But is it unique? Will happens if other projects, maybe newer ones with better technology, also build themselves a project like that?

It's unique so far. :) However, I'm not missing your point.

We have a community, a one stop communication platform.

Easy to remember and use - wallet ids, that we call user names.

The ability to communicate important information to most of our stakeholders and the landing page.

Alone, these might not be special. In combination, we have the ability to do what most chains can't. Onboard non-crypto users and educate them.

It has always frustrated me to watch other projects trying to achieve some of the things we have while we focus on our weaknesses instead of embracing our strengths.

The ability to communicate important information to most of our stakeholders and the landing page.

Alone, these might not be special. In combination, we have the ability to do what most chains can't. Onboard non-crypto users and educate them.

Ok, but other projects are able to implement things like this as well, right? Which means we have a head-start.

But is there something we have, that nobody else has and is difficult to re-create for other projects?

We have a stake-based consensus voting system, with a number of applications utilizing it in different ways.

It could also be used as a tool for gathering direction on future initiatives and development process.

Since the Steem blockchain shares many attributes with Bitshares and EOS, I'm not sure we have 1 different thing to point at.

However, if you look at the combination that we have, of fast, easy to learn and use, community friendly and communication platform ready with an active community, I do think that is a powerful message.

This blockchain is a Marketing Dream and could go many directions if we could get a team focused on a vision and a direction, coming up with a Package is easy. Figuring out who's role that is and making it happen appears to be much more difficult.

2 years ago I was attending Dash meetings and listening to them wish they had any of those capabilities.

However, if you look at the combination that we have, of fast, easy to learn and use, community friendly and communication platform ready with an active community, I do think that is a powerful message.

Indeed! Would you agree that Steem could become the Wordpress of crypto?

This blockchain is a Marketing Dream and could go many directions if we could get a team focused on a vision and a direction, coming up with a Package is easy.

Would you be open to take on this challenge?

I'm interested in contributing to the success of Steem and I think that having a vision and being able to communicate it is one of the most important things we need to do. I am absolutely willing.

This blockchain is a Marketing Dream and could go many directions if we could get a team focused on a vision and a direction,

That's really very important. Hopefully we will have soon better efforts towards the exploitation of the Marketing strategy... We have the best blockchain but still we don't know how to sell it, but we are improving

Bravo. That's the spirit.

I don't hate the UI, I love Steemit.com UI!

To be honest, I am very used to it now too.

Same here

The potential for massive diversity in applications is a huge deal. A lot of folks are building projects that are a little competitive, but also largely complementary. And the more apps that are built, along with more adoption of the services, will both keep and bring more folks to the blockchain, in various ways.
Folks are starting to see other ways to integrate Steem too. It doesn't have to be the main point of the site. SteemPress is offering a great service for folks who already have a blog, for instance.
But there are other ways to do this too. We have our financial site with non-Steem interaction discussing markets along with blogs integrated with Steem to provide more opportunities. Scripsio was just launched similarly, with a lot of non-Steem social features that provide for good interaction, with Steem blogs as well as subsites available.
Now we're seeing Steem dapps on several sites, increasing exposure. Plus there are competitors being built, which inevitably compare themselves to Steem. Unfortunately, they almost always compare themselves to Steemit. But that seems to be changing as the overall community matures as well.
And that's probably the greatest strength of Steem. There's a strong community that surrounds the project. It's been fragmented a bit and has bruises. But there's still a strong sense of ownership and belong among many. This doesn't seem as evident with other projects.

In my opinion Steem has three biggest strengths. I know that three isn't anymore "the biggest strength" but ranking them seems impossible.

  1. It is the ONLY working product on a large scale in crypto. Other projects are only selling dreams. EOS and Tron and other coins seem great because they haven't experienced what it's like in reality. Steem, on the other hand, has had every single problem that you can imagine and is still working great. A lot of us might be afraid that some competitor like EOS will create something that works better, but the truth is that the steem community and steemit inc have so much experience already that is almost impossible for a competitor to catch up (if we stay on this track). Also, our main competitors are general purpose blockchains, which have bigger concerns than creating social dapps. It will be harder for them to compete with Steem on the social aspect, because Steem has only one focus while they have many priorities.

  2. Steem is a great innovation. I am talking about the "upvote" feature. This is already being used in extremely useful ways. Just to site a few: advertising(vote selling and bid bots), Steemhunt (and all other platforms where you are rewarded for finding good deals), musing (and all other forum type apps where you are rewarded for answering questions), and of course, all dapps where you can reward your favorite creators (steemit, Dtube, DSound, etc...).

  3. Finally, the third great strength of steem is that although it is a great working crypto, it also has a LOT of potential. SMTs will strengthen what is already happening on steem, by making communities feel closer. I predict that in the next bull market for crypto, many, many websites that have nothing to do with crypto today will incorporate SMTs in their websites. It will allow their users to feel part of a community, and be rewarded for their effort.

Adding to number 2, don't forget @cleanplanet and all the possibilities that incentivizing virtue brings!

I just recently joined the Steemit Community a couple days ago and I will say its a very interesting platform. From what I have noticed already is that the community on here is great! Very welcoming and helpful.
As for the site itself, I enjoy it because its very easy to navigate and user friendly. There are a lot of guides which really helps being new to Steemit!
As a young entrepreneur and freelance marketer, everything about this site is very appealing. The business aspect is so unique and that's why I am choosing to stay on Steemit. You can tell the admins put in a lot of work to make this as successful as possible.

The only thing I would really like to see is a "fashion" topic for users. I currently own/run a store in the fashion industry and the growth in popularity in the last 7 years has been extremely impressive. With there being a lot of independent artists, small brands, small businesses, independent designers, etc I think making "fashion" a topic could be very beneficial. These people are always looking for new ways to connect and share but there are no real places to be able to do this socially besides Facebook and Instagram.

*My second blog post I made kind of goes over my store in the fashion industry if anyone wanted to check it out to get a better idea of what I am talking about above! (there is a video towards the bottom if you do not want to read all the text)

-Steven

This reminds me of what Ned said the other day about his goal one day there being the need for a gardening community on Steem. For now you can add "fashion" as a tag at the bottom of your post and maybe it will become fashionable :)

Exactly. In fact, the homesteading/permaculture/gardening community is very active on steem, just check #ghsc

I think Steem is unique given its integration of its community into the technology itself. It provides unique and flexible journeys for thise interested in engaging in different ways. You can come in as an investors and find many ways to improve your return or as a developer to create Dapps to attract users to a proven blockchain. It also provides the freedom to shift between how you want to engage and still have the opportunity to invest, create or consume content or develop. While still a relatively small conmunity, it is a passionate one that has proven resilient and dedicated to achieving goals of a having a sustainable ecosystem for all who participate. This is why while I am invested in many blockchain related ventures, I am vested here for my time and effort.

This is an easy one. THE strength of STeem is that offer not only content creators but audiences a way to make money while doing what everyone have been doing on the Internet for so many years. So it is a win win for everyone.

Steem's biggest strength is in the prospective and unconditional believe that it's holdlers have even at $0.29cent, this is the reason why it'll survive, other cryto may die but not steem, believe me steem has unconditional believers in it's prospective future. This is also the reason why'd see investors come here, and I'm here, because no other place has shown more credibility, not anywhere else

Rapid financial transactions.
The potential to create new dApps.
Users being paid to create content and contribute to a community.

Rapid financial transactions.

We're fast with 3s, but EOS is faster with 0.5s. So while this is a strength, it's not something we're the best in.

It's still fast than mainstream FIAT transactions. They can take up to 3 days in some cases. I didn't know about EOS's speed though. That's really cool.

Free Speech

I thought free speech is not so hard for any public chain to implement? People in China uses memos on Ethereum to fight CPC censorship on some occasions.

Yes, I'd say the same thing.
