SLC-S29/W4-“Thinking and Ideas!| Rethinking the Normal!
You know friends? Life is full of things we call “normal” without thinking. Some normal things are not good for us. I always try to see life with my own eyes. This week, I want to think about one normal system, question it and see how life can change if we do. Let's do.
◉1.Name one practice, belief, or system that people accept as normal but should be questioned. |
|---|
In my mind one system that we all accept as normal but should question is the way schools judge students only by marks and exams. From small kids to grown up students, marks decide everything. People say if you get low marks you are not smart. But exams only show memory not real talent. Many students are creative and good at problem solving but fail in exams. Society thinks this is normal and teachers, parents and friends all support it. We never think if this is really fair. I have seen many friends sad and stressed only because marks were low. We never ask if marks are only way to see intelligence. This system should be questioned because real life needs skills, thinking and courage. Exams are important but not everything. We should also think about students feelings and abilities.
◉2.Why do you think people rarely challenge it? |
|---|
People rarely challenge this system because it is everywhere. Parents and teachers faced it so everyone think it is normal. People are scare to speak against it. If someone says marks are not everything, others think they are lazy. Society likes simple ways to judge people. Numbers and grades are easy to compare. Changing this system seems risky. Parents worry their child will fail in life. Teachers worry exams are only way to teach. Many students feel they must follow it because everyone else does. People also think struggling is normal. So even if exams make students sad people accept it quietly. Questioning it feels hard and uncomfortable. Most just follow and hope for better marks next time. That is why very few really think or talk about changing this.
◉3.What could improve if this “normal” way changed? |
|---|
If this system changed, life of students will be much better. Students will not fear failure all time. They can try new things, be creative and confident. Teachers can teach real skills and not only book facts. Mental health of students will improve because pressure will reduce. Students can explore their own talents. Even weak students can feel proud of their skills. Classrooms will become happy places not stressful zones. Parents will understand that marks are not everything. Society start give value to effort hard work. Smart thinking more than only numbers. Students will learn to solve problems and think critical. Also express themselves freely. Education will become about learning and growing not just memorizing. I think many students will become better humans if marks are not only measure of success. Life will feel easier and happier.

◉4.What might be lost if it disappeared completely? |
|---|
If exams disappear completely, we might lose some structure. Exams give some order and teach responsibility. They also show basic knowledge and time management. Some students may feel lost without any tests. They may not study properly and plan their work. Parents may feel confused too. So I think exams should not go fully. But way we use them can change. Less stress, more creativity and projects. Balance is important. Students can learn in better way. We can keep exams small just to check basic knowledge. And focus more on skills and talents. Life will be happier and students can grow better. Exams are useful but must not destroy happiness. We can keep best of both worlds.

You've raised salient points.
But while I support that the grading system isn't totally effective, I also support that examinations should never be scrapped out, even a bit.
School does something to you:
I tell people, if you were not hardworking as a student, you'd struggle when you finally have to work for your daily bread.
School helped me learn how to think strategically to survive. It taught me how to research deeply.
Now, I see myself carrying out market analysis and competitor's audit for my business effortlessly (It's still stressful regardless) but it's better than if I lack the knowledge on how to go about sourcing for information. You get.
I support that educators should focus on building skills and talents. But learners need to be tested seriously. Some of us only get to take things seriously when losing comes at a cost.
That's because humans are competitive in nature and competitions help us test our abilities.
Being lenient would make many kids lazy, thus, stifling their growth.

Hi @shahidalinaz, welcome to thinking and ideas week 4
It is a general and normal thing for a student who has higher grades to be considered as the most intelligent or bright student. Those with low grades are seen as average students.
