I was talking to my partner about politics and racism, and how people treat these issues like coffee shop gossip. They can talk until the cows go home, spending their entire lives just talking about it but they never suggest a single meaningful idea for betterment.
I even mentioned how you often get dragged into these monologues, where the other person doesn't want a dialogue; they just want you to listen and agree, or else they’ll be offended.
I think to some extent this is age-related. I had acquaintances in one of the advanced Western European countries, older than me, who, whenever they got together, would only talk about politics and it would take up all the time of their nice meeting. Of course, back then, when I was quite young, I didn't understand this.
I didn't understand it even more because I was like: OMG, you don't even know what you're talking about and what you're complaining about. You don't even know how lucky you are to live here and not there. In short - you have no reason to complain, nor to waste your time discussing politics. Now that I'm not so young anymore, and it seems like I've turned into some kind of sour and nagging aunt, I watch the news and talk to the TV, objecting to all the nonsense that comes out of the screen in the evening. That's really sad. But somehow, age-appropriate, I think 😅
They always say the older we get, the more long-winded we become! LOL.
I talk to the TV too—especially during dramas. I’m like a live commentator, scolding the characters for their bad choices.
But I really get that feeling of being trapped in those political talks. I was in that exact situation yesterday; the person was just regurgitating views from some other idiot. I had to restrain myself from rolling my eyes and remind myself there’s no point in arguing!
