Horror style character sketch

in #steemexclusive6 days ago

The process for this started with laying down a rough shape with a cotton ball and black pastel chalk, I then use a cotton bud to refine the shapes before using Staedtler Mars black pencils. (4B,8B)
To finish the drawing I use a Derwent charcoal pencil, and an eraser for any highlights.

All sketches are done on an A5 drawing pad.

I took the photo's with a Samsung galaxy M31 smart phone, then I crop the images using Sony play memories home
as I have not learned any other software for editing photo's but used it for video for a while.

That first pass with a soft, smudged value block and then carving with a swab makes the later 4B/8B work land so clean, and the eraser hits sound crisp. Kinda funny that PlayMemories still does the job for cropping. Do you spray a light fixative between layers, especially after the charcoal pass, to keep the A5 pages from smudging? I’m keen to try this swab-first approach on my next study.

Thanks: I dont use fixative as I want more textures and I try to work fast.
