So much shite and spam posted here.....steemCreated with Sketch.

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

This whole site is badly flawed, its so easy to see just watching my 'new' feed the number of 'rings' of people resteeming and upvoting each others posts and of people using a scattergun approach and posting a few copied photos here and a rewritten smoothie recipe there.

Id suggest 80% of everything here is utter bollocks and its such a shame because there are some wonderful contributors here who provide informative and entertaining content and its them who are being cheated out of just rewards by this lack of a system to regulate and approve content and get a grip on the upvote bots and the 'I'll follow you if you follow me brigade'.

How many posts do I see that say simply 'wow, bitcoin just hit $xxxxx'. Seriously, you expect to be paid for that ?

How sad that this site is being ruined for the few by the many. I cant think of many ideas to combat this but,

a) Dont allow new users to earn rewards until theyve reached a certain reputation threshold and certain number of posts.

b) Make all posts use @originalworks and if possible, couldnt someone write something to check photos for originality ? Something like a tineye bot ?

Just my tuppence worth.

Thanks to all the quality contributors Ive enjoyed reading these past few weeks, and to the spammers and grabbers, please, have some respect and responsibility, and leave the reward pool for those that deserve it and post in the spirit of the community.

Sort:

Today I had a new user ask me if this platform was like Facebook if it was ok to just post photos, much in the same way FB does "albums" So I explained that storytelling is best.

Sure some of it is just ignorance and money-grabbing but there is a segment of folks who just don't understand the ediquitte. Either..

Maybe the steemit marketing of "HEY MAKE MONEY HERE" is drawing the wrong type of attitude toward posting as well..

Great suggestions either way. I think a tineye bot and originalwork sweep would certainly help

Thanks for the constructive response ! Again, excellent point about it being marketed as a social network where you get paid for posting, and spot on that of course some people are ignornant to the aims. I see it more like 'medium' than 'facebook'.
cheers

I totally agree, If i thought it was anything like facebook i certainly wouldn't be here- ;)

I agree :( I'm tired of all of this BS, and as you say, it really is a shame...but apparently it does work to post the same thing over and over. Another annoying thing is that there are a select few who seem to get all the attention - big curators and the like...even if the quality of their posts is mediocre, at best.
Quality doesn't seem to be top priority...

I totally agree, many also appear to have very high reputation scores which again is just wrong. Its very 'closed shop' here.

Indeed, there are a select few who are high and mighty and the rest of us just scrambling for readers :/

Wow, great post. I'm glad that someone who isn't one of the "big boys" had the balls to say it.

Actually I find most of the things posted on this site completely unbearable. I comment on people's posts of for example annotated pictures or photographs asking questions which I hope will encourage people to realise that a post should be more than a simple cut and paste job, that it actually requires a bit of work, but this very frequently seems to filter through. How much effort does it really take to add a description and some basic information to a picture or youtube video (which these people didn't create, FFudgeS).

There are people on here getting away with all sorts of copyright infringement and plagiarism and I think that in the long term the owners of Steemit will have to pay for this major flaw because posts can not be completely deleted.

Another really major issue is self voting and nepotism amongst the more powerful members the trend of which leads curation scavengers to upvote posts that most teachers wouldn't accept from primary school children and all of this is hidden behind a cringeworthy veneer of politeness that people maintain on this site in the hopes of being liked and appreciated.

I personally don't bother to post anymore. I'm happy not to waste hours of my life writing and illustrating original content which won't be seen or commented upon anyway in favour of plagiarised content and cut and paste work. Nowadays I just read other people's posts and comment on that.

Thats what I would have said if I was as good with words as you my friend.

You made a very good point. Perhaps trolling the obviously fake and copy posts is one answer, and Im in total agreement about just commenting. Being reactive as opposed to proactive is a way to still join in the debate, although the secret handshake club is always going to rankle.

Despite 23 views, this post has no comment from the old school Steemians. I may just search a few out and tag them to try and illicit a response.

Maybe you should do that and see if the debate about the issues with Steemit can continue to gain traction or be at least be revived. I know that @adm and @steemcleaners were working on the issue of spam as per This post.

i made up your 3p to $0.99 -- seemed fitting when you were talking of pound land style spam content. i hear you, it's a constant problem ;)

Why insult Poundland, the quality there is better. At least it's original.

Top comment of the month :-)

Thank you Mr Humble, and with Poundland shares taking a 60% hit perhaps it was a fitting gesture......

So, whats to be done ? how do i get to see your new posts and @honeydue 's without having to click daily on your name in my list and have to visit your profile to see if youve written anything ? Obviously my feed would be a better way but as its full of indian boys taking selfies, its not fit for purpose.

i have no idea what best way i would suggest a preferred pigeon fancier and some google prototype carrier pigeon location specs but maybe for now just use the follow button and hope for the best.

@steemcleaners and @cheetah, along with people like the extremely hardworking @patrice, work diligently in the background. However, they have a lot to go through, so many posts and new people registering daily...

What I have noticed is the follow4follow brigade tends to lose interest after a few weeks. They do not form their tribe, therefore never get to have that feeling of belonging which is one of the main draws of the platform. So they move on to the next "get rich quick" scheme when they realize Steemit takes patience and dedication.

I got my comment copied and pasted yesterday! grrrrrrrrrrrrr
(as well as the guy who made the original post - SO pissed off - I did my first flag ever! Just to make sure he got no reward. Twat!

Has this happened to you?- for me, it's a first - as far as I am aware..

https://steemit.com/blog/@lucylin/annoying-plagiarsim-getting-paid

I reported it to @steemcleaners

I have not encountered that yet. How blatant! And maddening!

but I'm not whining...

Thanks for that. Perhaps I wrote this in a state of frustration and haste! Two weeks later, and Im a lot more settled and enjoying reading so much interesting work. The financial aspect wasnt and doesnt draw me, but at the time I was expecting a higher quality of content which after a lot digging, I am finding.
Thanks again.

Good to hear :)

Build your tribe, follow and support quality authors so your feed is full of compelling inspiration, and you will get the best of Steemit :)

Not happened to me but I havent posted that much, but that is seriously annoying. However, the reverse happened. I posted an article I originally wrote for another site, and cheetah flagged it as plaguerism, I thought that it was strange so I followed cheetahs link and lo and behold it was my original piece! Strictly steemit originals for me from now on lol

The @OriginalWorks bot has determined this post by @nathen007 to be original material and upvoted(1.5%) it!

Nice. Yes many people are spamming over comments but I just ignore them and try to conceal their comments. Beware on clicking links in comment, it's dangerous. It can hack oir acount. There are many safe post links commented but it's better to be safe than sorry.

i agree, thanks for the advice. Espevially never open links from unknown sources. Better safe than sorry :-)
