RE: Friends of Gondor - Weekly Update 10: Quiet Week As Backlog For New Lease Orders Start To Grow!
Hi @daclawboyz... The Stewards of Gondor are the people that were delegated SP by @fulltimegeek. What happened was that FTG got so much power in the beginning that he was afraid he was going to skew the rewards by being too big. He was concerned that the weight of his vote could skew who succeeded and who didn't. So he devised a plan to delegate almost all of his SP to people who he felt would build the community and make steemit a better place. That way he was no longer the "decider", but instead his power was used by his stewards (stewardsofgondor members) to use their good judgement to grow the communities in ways they deemed right. IE he spread the responsibility to people that he felt did a good job.
It worked as many awesome steemians have trained many more steemian to be good community members. I myself was a delegee from @abh12345 who is a SOG member. Asher, @goldendawne, and @coolguy123 have all shown me how important it is to carry out the spirit of what @fullltimegeek did.
Then what happened is that FTG decided to take back all the power that he had delegated in order to fight against what he felt was greed by a specific large steemian (known as the flag wars if you have ever seen that term). So since he took back all his delegations, that left many of his stewards with a tremendous loss of power. Many of them had projects that they were working on and it was quite a blow to lose that support, so I decided to see if I could start something to help them.
Basically I came up with the idea of "friends" of gondor because I myself have never been delegated SP from @fulltimegeek. But I knew that I wanted to help keep this message of selflessness alive and keep people motivated to continue to be community oriented. I also knew there were many other people like me that also respected and admired what the stewardsofgondor had done collectively to make this place a better place to be. I thought they would also want to help keep this project alive.
So I decided to start @friendsofgondor as a vehicle to do just that. What happens is really simple. We do a post once a week and take whatever that post pays and add it to what donations come in, and then use that money to lease Steem Power. This SP is then used to upvote all SOG members posts to give them a level of support. While it is not anything like the support they used to have, it is still a nice thing to know they are getting the full value of the votes from the account. The account only upvotes the current SOG members and no one else. It essentially is a way for people like me as well as SOG members themselves to say with every vote that is cast that "stewardsofgondor" is still alive in spirit. We respect what @fulltimegeek taught us and that his efforts are not in vain.
One other thing I forgot to mention, some steemians have also delegated SP to the account for free just to show their support. Most minnows don't have that ability so they usually donate either sbds or steem or just upvote the posts. But some of the larger steemians delegate some of their SP to help the account cast a more meaningful vote.
This is the end of the 10th week and we have now reached 4000 SP from nothing, so it really is an amazing compliment to see how much people want to show the support to the stewards and fulltimegeek himself.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask... I am happy to answer anything! :)
Wow Dave, this might be the most incredible response I've ever received on this platform. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the history... I really appreciate it. This platform is great, but it is often hard to find out the background of things...
Looks like I've stumbled across an amazingly caring and supportive group started by an incredibly supportive geek. Very impressed by what you've all managed to achieve, especially in the face of so much selfish behaviour on the platform.
Unfortunately I'm way too small to contribute in any meaningful way, but please know that I'm incredibly excited to find such an honest and hardworking group on the blockchain. It's easy to read a lot of negativity and this has filled this newbie with a whole lot of hope.
Thanks again!
Thank you for that compliment... I just wanted to give you the respect that you deserved by asking such a thoughtful quesiton... I'm happy also for you to learn what @fulltimegeek has done and why hopefully many more people will follow his lead in the future. To me it is very inspirational and one of the big reasons why I have hope for this place (despite some gaping negatives too)... And don't worry whether you are small or big, just paying attention and helping however you can in the ways that suit you the best is great. That is how we network and build a strong community, so its nice to meet you @daclawboyz! :)
