A world without work?

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

We still long way from this but as the technology is getting better from day to day we may be there at some point

Thus maybe the real threat to AI replacing certain types of routine middle class jobs is that we will have a poorer middle class in the short term, and a very reduced middle class in the long term?

This.

It seems that income redistribution would be required to solve this. That is very hard for libertarians or conservatives to swallow and the trouble is socialists who are in favour of redistribution do not mind increasing state power. I'm in favour of automatic redistribution with very limited government. That's something that would go very well with blockchains becoming ubiquitous and government run by people being increasingly replaced by DAOs and AI systems of various kinds.

Great point. I read the first half of the sentence and thought, 'that sounds like a good thing for a blockchain to solve', and then read the rest!

I wonder if having a poorer middle class is somewhat offset by having a larger one as we see in the emerging market countries? The tougher impact will be in developed countries but the favt that most of the world’s population isn’t there may lead for bright spot overall.

Quite possibly, also if we can sort out some sort of basic income, this should just mean more leisure time for a more educated middle class.

But I seem to remember hearing that argument somewhere before....!

Interesting book that you've shared with us, @revisesociology!

I've only had the opportunity to read McAfee and Brynjolfsson's book, "Race Against the Machine," but nevertheless, books such as these ones definitely make us rethink the profound impact that technology has, or eventually will have, on our livelihoods. I think I will definitely give "The People Versus Tech," it has pipped my curiosity. Thanks! You’ve just got a full upvote from us.

Hey thanks - it is an interesting read, especially as the author started off as a tech utopian.

Also an easy read!

Thanks for the vote comment - i'll be sure to check out your project too!

Hmm, I'm not impressed with gmail predictive test. I've been teaching it for ages and it still hasn't got a clue. I can't see it putting me out of work any time soon, just the opposite, I'm spending more and more time correcting its errors. Isn't this a bit what they said about computers?

Did you do that deliberately to prove your point?

I just find it suggests bland platitudes so tend to avoid it! It is useful for names - especially when you're replying to people who tend to have various different spellings.

Hehe, that was normal human error :)
I find it will propose whole phrases in an email which are nothing to do with what I'm writing about. Thankfully, I usually remember to re-read the email before I send it.

One solution could be taxing new "AI jobs" to be a little less expensive than its human counterpart, and redistribute that tax to all "humans" as a minum survival salary, hopefully also an amount sufficient to enjoy the life at its fullness. A sort of utopia where machines are serving humanity and not enslaving it.

Interesting idea, but i just can't vision how it would be implemented, or where the boundaries between AI and non AI will be drawn!
