The body of this fish is quite heavy and robust. Its most distinctive feature is the bright red or orange coloration of its tail. Its upper body is dark gray or black, while its underside is white or a pale cream color. It possesses long whiskers (barbels) on its face, which assist it in locating prey in murky waters.
Temperament and Size

The Redtail Catfish is renowned for its incredibly rapid growth rate. A small fish can, in a remarkably short time, grow to a length of 3 to 5 feet and reach a weight of up to 80 kilograms. It is a predatory fish. While it may appear docile in temperament, it will prey upon any smaller fish that fits into its mouth. Under favorable conditions, this fish can live for 15 to 20 years.

Although this fish looks small and attractive in pet stores, keeping one at home is not a task for everyone. Due to its immense size, it requires a tank of at least 1,000 to 2,000 liters or a large indoor pond. Keeping it in a small tank causes it to become stressed, and its growth becomes stunted. This fish generates a significant amount of waste, necessitating a very powerful filtration system. The water temperature should be maintained between 24°C and 28°C.

The Redtail Catfish is often referred to as the "Demon of the Aquarium World" because many people purchase it but find themselves unable to manage it once it grows to full size. People frequently release them into local rivers or ponds; this can prove hazardous to the environment, as the fish preys upon native species found there. You should only consider keeping this fish if you possess ample space and the commitment to care for it over the long term. It is an intelligent fish that, over time, learns to recognize its owner and can even be hand-fed.
