Random Blog on Crypto (Part 101) : Cross-Chain Swaps without Bridges

Let’s talk about how cross chain swap works with bridges. I move coins across chains in two ways. Cross-chain swaps without bridges generally work in two ways: atomic swaps or intent-based flows. Atomic swaps are the older and this is more cryptographically rigid method. They use time-locks or adaptor signatures so the swap is fully trustless either both sides settle or nothing happens at all. Custodian is needed here. The guarantees are strong. The trade-off is that the setup can be slow and the user experience isn’t always friendly. Without coordinating each step, you simply declare the outcome you want. Solvers then compete in the background to fulfill your request quickly. For this it is using their liquidity or hedging strategies while you sign only the constraints and a short deadline. When it works, each chain settles as promised and the whole experience feels seamless.
Both paths have their own trade-offs. Atomic swaps offer hard security guarantees but require more patience. Intent-based swaps offer speed and convenience but depend on healthy solver competition and clear rules for refunds. Because of that, I prefer systems where failure states are explicit and funds come back cleanly if something breaks. In this way slower chains require longer deadlines and I make sure to keep gas on the destination chain. Sponsored gas can help in a pinch, but it’s better not to rely on it. Over time, these habits make a big difference. Every test builds confidence, and every smooth settlement reinforces what works. Just test small and learn the system and then size up only when you’re ready.

Cross chain swaps are the need of time because it allows us to swap coins between multiple chains which removes barries from single network.
