Out Of The Box (Mystery)

Words flow better when they follow keynotes ;)

I had to walk through the forest. Somebody told me the fungi I needed would grow in this particular forest.

"Under the greenest ivy they lie
and wave to life within goodbye.
A tiny bite is just enough,
no pain will cause,
a little cough.
Your eyes will shut,
your heart will stop."

My bag with my pocketknife inside was hanging over my left shoulder. The sun was shining among the leaves and made my eyes close instinctively whenever a bright beam escaped and met with my face.

My pacing was steady, I kept looking for the plants I was after. They were hard to find and very very small, your eye could easily miss them. Their color did not help either. Brownish. They hid underneath the ivy leaves that dressed the tall trees, like costumes for a peculiar masquerade.

And as I was walking, I suddenly found myself in front of an old wooden box. This got me curious. I gave it an examining look. The boards it was made of seemed to be still strong despite the time that left its unfading mark on them.

I came closer. There were big, rusty nails keeping those boards together. What was really really awkward though, was the fact that I could not find the lid, as if it didn't have any. The box was nailed all around as if the man who made it never wanted it to be opened, never wanted to let its treasure out.

My hand touched its wood. Splinters were protruding from its skin. One pricked me, but it didn't make it in my flesh. Then I went for the nails. Big and round. They were engraved with something. Was it a word? Because the carvings resembled letters only from a language I didn't seem to understand.

I touched one of them. My finger felt its rusty surface. Cold. It made quite a contrast with the warm wood I had felt a moment ago. I tried to make it move, I wanted to see if I could take it out. It would make a lovely souvenir from my hunt.

I got lucky. It did! Little by little I tried to pull it out shaking it side to side to make it slide out if its place... set it free. Finally, after many times my hand had gone back and forth, my trophy was in my hand and a grin of contentment was drawn on my face.

The nail was thick and long, I leaned over its hollow niche and tried to follow the light as it got sucked into its pitch black guts. I tried to follow it and maybe guess that box's content.

The box got me first!

A plume of thin black air uncoiled and escaped through the luscious foliage over my head.

The sun was shadowed and the skies were getting dark.

"Aaah, it seems like we have a competitor... or a companion, time will tell."

I am becoming obsessed with Gundry's music! His keys unlock so weird and dark words in my mind. His tunes make gloomy images pass behind my eyes. His compositions wake morbid stories come to life (actually, come to my screen). Don't you agree that his music is just brilliant?

PS: My battery doesn't work! I haven't used my camera in almost two weeks and that's just sad! The warranty won't cover for it and the service at the store where we bought it from was simply... unacceptable! I'm hoping to get a new one within the next days so I can get back to my hobby.

Thank you so much for your time!

Until my next post,
Steem on and keep smiling, people!

That is great. I love reading your stories. I would love to see what you could do with some of Max Richters music from the Leftovers soundtrack from the HBO series. I put it on at work a lot of times and just go with the flow. It amazes me what feelings he can make you feel with only a piano.

The music is awesome! I had it playing while working today, thanks! I saved them in my S&M (Story Material) list ;)

I am very happy for the clarification. Lol

I'm beginning to consider the addition of soundtracks to my stories now. It really made sense reading with the audio on, just that I had to replay the audio because it finished too early...

By the way, how do you get matching soundtracks ?? Trial and Error??

It helps a lot to create the fitting atmosphere.

It is rarely Trial & Error. Most of the time I put a piece on and let it lead my imagination ;)
I may have an idea I want to make a story of. I will either put on music I already know or I will type the genre I need (eg dark music), try a few tracks until I find one that I like and start typing...

Oh.... Okay. Thank you so much

Beautifully written @ruth-girl.You have an amazing gift to write fiction. As I was reading this,I felt a picture unfold before my eyes and that is not something just anyone can do.Well done!!

Oh! Thank you very much! I'm happy to hear you liked it! :D

Ok now i'm curious about this Peter Gundry...i'm hoping to see if his music can get me obsessed too and make me write magic about a leisure walk in the woods. YouTube here i come

His music is dark, vampiric most of the times. If it doesn't make you write, at least it will help you relax... or get afraid of the dark :P

You've got an amazing mind to create fictions like this....you should write scripts for movies, you know.sorry about your camera

Oh thank you! You think I should try that? It's easier to write separate episodes and vignettes like this one and always had the fear that I would suck at writing a longer story.
Anyways, thanks for coming over :)

You don't need that fear anymore.
I don't know what @stephenpaul thinks, but @anibas thinks you should try that. :P

Hehe! Maybe I should, I am taking baby steps for now ;)

I agree with @anibas
You'll be great @ruth-girl

η μπαταρία θέλει το Τρολ της... :p
καταπληκτικό το story... καλο βράδυ...

Λες ρε Νικο; Να τη δωσω στα τρολ μπας και βγαλουν ακρη;

Wow! A perfect combo of creativity, originality, and weirdness.
You're truly an imaginative weirdo, Ruthie - and I salute you for that.
You've got an evolved mind.

Nice piece Ruthie

PS: sorry about your battery

Thank you Sammy for always being so kind! :D

Nice story!!!
I'm sorry for your battery.

Thanks @nikoleondas!!
I believe I'll have it fixed by next week :)

Not every obsession is a bad thing. My camera is just gathering dust :(

So is mine :(
As I was going through a forum the other day, someone said that they delivered their camera for a service and when they got it back, the autofocus wasn't working anymore. After a second visit for a service, they were told that the back lid was damaged during the first delivery to the technician. So, I'm guessing that could be the case with your camera too.

Those imbeciles at the store I bought it from wanted me to deliver the whole kit (camera, lenses, charger and battery) in order to send it back to the official service in Athens. NO WAY!! I'd rather pay those 50 euros to buy a new battery and not risk damaging my camera!!

Yes, I'm still not able to send mine back to where I bought it as it was in another state and I do not want to send it via courier as I really do not know what they'd do with it.
It's better you play on the safe side and get your battery than risk sending all the camera accessories which may come back either damaged or with some of them missing.

Though I've called the store I bought it from, they say I should bring it over for their technician to take a look at it. Why do they want the whole package? Can't you just pop out the battery and send it to them? That is some weird request.

I hate technicians! Actually, I hate those technicians that work for the stores because they treat appliances like garbage, I had sent a laptop some time ago and they returned it scratched! I have come to trust only friends or my friends' friends to service my stuff...

Just find someone you can trust with your baby :)

They want the whole package because it is their shitty policy to check if the whole camera works right. That is stupid, why send them a working camera when we know that the problem is in the battery? I understand it if they want to check the charger, but NOT MY CAMERA!!
(Ruth gets really sensitive with her tech-children)

Oh, I see now. The camera tech does not trust their customers to have the right technical knowledge of the device. I can understand their point as someone who has seen some crazy stories from tech support who have some funny, ignorant customers like the one below:

One day a user calls because her computer wouldn’t power on. OK, so I take the trip upstairs and sure enough no power to the CPU or monitor. I follow the power cords to a power strip, but I couldn’t see the power switch. A head of lettuce in a grocery bag had fallen from her desk onto the switch and turned it off. We still laugh about the ‘Death by Vegetable’ ticket… Source
