Approachability Is a Patient-Safety SkillsteemCreated with Sketch.

Daybook August 10

An educator can stand right beside a learner and still feel far away. In clinical education, distance is not measured only in steps. It is measured in what happens when the learner says, “I am not sure.”

Approachability is often described as a desirable personality trait, but at the bedside it becomes something more concrete. Can the nurse or student ask a question before uncertainty becomes an error? Can they stop when a cue does not make sense? Can they disclose a difficulty without expecting ridicule? The educator’s first response teaches the learner whether help-seeking is safe.

Bedside presence also gives educators something a needs-assessment form cannot: authentic performance. We can see where attention goes, which cues are missed, how priorities are chosen, and how patients are spoken to. But observation must not become surveillance. A learner who feels watched for failure may hide uncertainty more carefully.

Good bedside coaching is therefore timed and restrained. Protect the patient first. Correct only what must be corrected immediately. Preserve the learner’s dignity in front of the patient. Then step aside, reconstruct the reasoning, and give the learner another chance to perform.

The goal is not an educator who is always physically close. It is an educator who is close enough to notice, safe enough to be asked, and skilled enough to turn a real clinical moment into learning.

One Line for Nurses and Learners:
Be present enough to notice and approachable enough to be asked.
