Entertainment Blog #387 | Crime 101 [2026] : Sometimes, Theft is the Answer...

When it comes to crime thrillers about heists, most movies follow a simple formula. Big robbery. Smart criminal. Determined cop. But sometimes, the interesting part is not the crime itself. It’s the people involved. Crime 101 leans more into that space. It’s not just about stealing diamonds. It’s about choices, identity, and how far someone is willing to go before walking away.

“Crime 101” is a #crime #thriller #movie directed by Bart Layton, based on a novella by Don Winslow. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan. The film was released in February 2026 and was later dropped on Prime Video. I was planning to go to see this movie in the theatre, but I was unable to do it.

The story begins in Los Angeles, where Mike Davis, a highly disciplined jewel thief, pulls off a near-perfect diamond robbery along Highway 101. He follows strict rules. No violence. No evidence. No mistakes. But one unexpected moment during a heist shakes his confidence, making him question whether he should walk away for good.

At the same time, Detective Lou Lubesnick becomes obsessed with a pattern behind these robberies. While others ignore it, he believes one man is behind everything. As Mike plans what could be his final big score, his path crosses with Sharon, an underestimated insurance broker who is frustrated with her own life. Their collaboration slowly forms, not out of trust, but out of opportunity.

As the story moves forward, things get messy. A messy criminal enters the picture. Loyalties shift. Personal lives start collapsing. And what looked like a clean, calculated heist slowly turns into a game of survival, manipulation, and timing, where the line between hunter and hunted completely disappears.

There’s also a subtle social layer here. The film touches on class, ambition, and systemic failure. None of these characters is fully good or bad. The thief wants a way out. The cop is overlooked. The broker feels stuck in a system that undervalues her. Everyone is chasing something. And sometimes, crime becomes just another path to escape, maybe for everyone.

The film had a budget of around $90 million but only made about $71–72 million worldwide, making it a box office disappointment despite the big cast. Critically, though, it performed much better, holding around 88% on Rotten Tomatoes with audiences also responding positively. CinemaScore gave it a B, showing decent audience reception even if it wasn’t a massive hit.

So will Mike actually walk away from the life he built? Can Lou finally prove what no one else believes? And when everyone is playing their own game, who really wins in the end? It’s up to you to find out.
