Watch a movie that lifts your spirit or makes you laugh.

"Michael Madana Kama Rajan", starring Kamal Haasan, Orvashi, Roobini and Kushboo. One of Kamal Haasan's best comedy films. He played four roles: a cook, an educated man returning from abroad, a fire rescuer and an underworld don. Unknowingly, they meet each other on various occasions, and a gang leader tries to use the cook to acquire the assets of the man who returned from abroad.

The four children each go their separate ways, into different environments. The upbringing of each child was also different. There is Kameshwaran, the boy from Kerala; Michael, who prints counterfeit currency notes; Madanagopal, who, despite being a biological child, is raised as an adopted son; and Subramaniam Raju, the firefighter. Let's look at each character and their characteristics.

Although there are four characters—Michael, Madhan, Kameshwaran, and Subramaniam Raju—they were all played by the same actor, Kamal Haasan! Michael is a man with a rigid personality. He's a thug, a gangster, a smuggler. Accordingly, with his French beard and gruff voice, he portrayed a certain rigidity in his acting. Madhan is highly educated and intelligent. Therefore, he is depicted as having a visual impairment. Although Kameshwaran's origins are in Tamil Nadu, he lived under the influence of Kerala. His speech carries the flavour of Palakkad. All he knows is his father, cooking, smoking, Varadakutty, the kitchen, the grocery store... and finally, Tripurasundari. Subramaniam Raju is an orphan living without support. He is a firefighter, and his speech reflects the Madras dialect.

What moment in the movie made you smile or laugh the most?

The film features great music, and Kamal Haasan has showcased his versatility in each of the characters he portrayed. As each character, played by Kamal Haasan, observes himself as if looking in a mirror, the film and the story unfold naturally. The entire film is filled with such scenes and dialogues. It's uncertain whether a film like this will ever be made again. The personality of Kamal Haasan plays on screen with the weapons of acting, story, and screenplay. And behind the screen, it was Crazy Mohan's sharp writing that was at play. The cinematic language used in this film is aesthetically rich. Every scene in the film is the epitome of simplicity, without confusing the viewers in the slightest.

What made the film feel comforting, joyful, or hopeful?

What's most remarkable about MMKR's storytelling is how it deftly handles its multiple plotlines, weaving them together without ever making the narrative confusing. Just look at the events unfolding in the immediate vicinity of the "Vechalum Vekkamaponalum" song – there's so much happening in these frames, yet you never lose track of what's going where and how.

Of course, none of this would be possible without Kamal Haasan's impressive acting prowess. It's not just about him changing costumes, putting on a little makeup, altering the pronunciation of a few words, and expecting us to buy it. You genuinely see four different men on screen, with their speech, mannerisms, and behaviour matching their respective characters. From Madhan's clear and articulate speech to Michael's rough, boorish nature, to Kameswaran's short, rotund persona, a masterclass in acting is on display here.

Would you recommend this movie to a friend who’s feeling down?

Since this film was made in the Tamil language, I recommend it to my Tamil-speaking friends on Steemit. However, as this film has also been dubbed into Telugu and Hindi, I recommend it to other Indian friends on Steemit as well. Since more than 26 years have passed since this film was released, I don't think the comedic dialogues that were trending back then will be suitable for the current times; they will be completely different. Therefore, instead of laughter, some scenes might even evoke anger.

How did this movie improve your mood or perspective?

I was a young girl when this film was released, and I watched it in the theatre at that time. Since then, the film has been released many times on television and OTT platforms, giving me the opportunity to watch it repeatedly. Moreover, many of its comedy scenes have been featured in various TV shows and comedy skits, which I have also seen. Furthermore, its comedy scenes are still very popular and widely viewed on YouTube today. So whenever I feel sad, I watch comedy scenes like these on YouTube or TV.
