🖼️ More Than a Small Chapel
More Than a Small Chapel
At first glance, it may seem like just a small building painted in a beautiful shade of blue.
But in the Azores, chapels like this are much more than architecture.
Scattered across villages and quiet country roads, these small places of worship have been part of island life for generations. They have witnessed baptisms, weddings, moments of gratitude, silent prayers, and farewells. Long before social media connected communities, places like this brought people together.
What immediately caught my attention was its simplicity.
There are no grand towers or elaborate decorations. Just clean lines, a modest bell, a white cross reaching toward the sky, and a vivid blue façade that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding greenery.
The year 1954, displayed above the entrance, quietly tells part of its story. While buildings grow older, they also become richer in memories. Every visitor, every celebration, and every passing year leaves an invisible mark that no camera can fully capture.
As photographers, we often search for spectacular locations, but I've learned that some of the most meaningful photographs come from places that don't demand attention.
They simply wait.
This little chapel doesn't need to be famous.
Its beauty lies in its authenticity.
📷 Behind the Lens
What attracted me wasn't only the building itself, but the harmony of its colours. The vibrant blue façade, framed by crisp white details and illuminated by warm afternoon light, immediately stood out against the natural backdrop.
I chose a straight-on composition to emphasise the symmetry of the architecture. Sometimes the simplest perspective tells the strongest story.
🌍 Did You Know?
Small roadside chapels are a familiar sight throughout the Azores. Many were built by local communities or families as expressions of faith, gratitude, or devotion to a particular saint.
Although modest in size, they often become the heart of neighbourhood celebrations during local religious festivals, preserving traditions that have been passed down for generations.
