Bitcoin in El Salvador | Not everything went as planned… but the change has already begun

It can't be said that it was a massive impact as many thought, nor that everyone is now paying with Bitcoin on every corner, because that's not the reality. But something did happen, and for me, it's even more important in the long run: a great many people had their first contact with the crypto world thanks to that movement. And that's no small thing.

Because it's one thing to hear about Bitcoin from afar, as something strange, complex, or even dangerous, and quite another to live in an environment where you can use it, where you see ATMs, wallets, businesses that accept it, and where the government, whether you like it or not, encourages you to try it. That greatly reduces the entry friction, which is one of the biggest obstacles in this ecosystem.

Furthermore, it's not just about Bitcoin. The interesting thing is that once people enter that world, they start exploring other alternatives. And that's where stablecoins, like USDT or USDC, come in, which in practice end up being even more useful for everyday life, especially in countries where volatility can be a problem.

In fact, one statistic caught my attention: according to recent reports, the use of digital wallets for receiving remittances in El Salvador increased by 146% during 2026. And of course, when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. If you can receive money from anywhere in the world, almost instantly, with much lower fees and without traditional intermediaries, why not do it?

Before, sending money involved banks, exchange houses, waiting times, and sometimes absurd fees… now, with these tools, you can do it directly from wallet to wallet, regardless of the country of origin or destination. That completely changes the game, especially for those who depend on remittances.

So, although the initial project wasn't the "boom" many imagined, it did plant a seed. And what it planted was curiosity, access, and, above all, real-world use. Because in the end, adoption doesn't happen by decree or because it's trendy; it happens when people find the tools useful.

And that's precisely what's happening. Little by little, without the initial fanfare, the crypto ecosystem continues to grow. Not explosively, but more organically, more genuinely. People who previously had no idea about it are now receiving money, sending it, testing applications, and learning.

Sometimes we expect massive changes in a short period, but the reality is that significant transformations tend to be quieter. They gradually take hold, little by little, until one day you look back and realize the landscape has changed completely.
