Insurance Activity in Times of Covid

in Project HOPE3 years ago

I recently read in the Venezuelan digital press that a day of hospitalization in a private clinic for a patient with COVID-19 can cost between $ 2,000 - $ 3,000.

This shocked me a lot since, in my family, there have been 2 cases of covid and the period of severity and recovery can last between 15 days and more than a month, depending on the conditions of each patient. Which makes us think of an expense that almost no Venezuelan can cover.

"We would be talking about an average between 20 to 30 thousand dollars for 15 days of hospitalization."

Related to this, the Venezuelan government administration imposed by presidential decree obligations on insurance companies, which must cover the expenses of their clients.
Circular SAA-91109 of the Superintendency of Insurance Activity, dated March 26, indicates that insurance companies have the obligation to cover a maximum of 14 days of hospitalization and recognize a maximum of $ 23,595 in expenses for patients insured and cared for in top-notch clinics.

But the coin has two sides. We have two visions of the same problem, and that is that if in the case of patients, this represents an unaffordable expense, for insurance companies it also represents a crisis that could lead to a financial collapse, since in Venezuela, the lack of control of prices, the lack of national products, the difficult access to foreign currency, and hyperinflation do not allow for a healthy and stable administration.

Consequently, insurance companies have had to reinvent themselves in times of pandemic, adjusting the coverage of their policies.
All these changes end up affecting customers, policyholders, who see how all the time they have been contributing and the breadth of their policies would be insufficient to care for the health of their loved ones in the event of suffering from covid.

Life insurances

What about insurance in case of death?
As long as there is a valid policy and the policyholders are up to date with their payments, the beneficiaries should be covered in the event of death due to complications related to the coronavirus.

Insurance companies cannot change premiums or customer ratings. This should be the case even if the beneficiary contracts COVID-19, or if an increased risk of exposure is assumed due to work or travel reasons.

In many cases, companies would be offering new fixed-term and lifetime policies during the pandemic, adjusting waiting periods and increasing costs. Thus, when some life insurance companies increase the rates and the safest thing is that there is a domino effect with the other companies, which would do the same.

New questions will probably be incorporated in the previous interviews, related to the coronavirus when considering the new life insurance policies, and the applications could be delayed if, for example, the future insured made a trip to a country or city with high rates of contagion, or if you had close contact with someone who received a positive diagnosis.

Since studies have shown that the elderly are more prone to death in case of covid infection, the coverage of the policies would be readjusted considering the age of the future insured.

Would this be an attack on the right to life?

Perhaps we could argue about it, but we must remember that the insurance activity is a business, it is a trade, where a well-formed company only expects to receive the return on its investments.

Hello @ juanmolina!
Definitely this is a very worrying situation especially in this country where everything is too expensive and covering the treatment for this disease is uphill and you have to ask for help. My 90 year old grandfather tested positive and they treated him at Rascarven in Caracas and approximately the expense in 10 days was more than 5000$ outside of the high cost medicines. It is not easy neither for the insured nor for the insurance companies to cope with this situation. Greetings!

Hello Friend @yusvelasquez.

I'm very sorry about your grandfather's situation. I hope he recovers soon.
I can deduce from the cost of those 10 days for $ 5000, that your grandfather was not confined to the Intensive Care Unit. Thank god!

Fortunately, your family was able to cover such high expenses. But the majority of the Venezuelan population does not have that possibility.

hello @juanmolina,
it's really crazy because treating a person with the virus can cost more than 20k $, many of the insurances are not accepted by the clinics unless it is in $, all this situation makes that people are unfortunately unprotected against this pandemic both by law and by the insurances.

The most horrible behaviors of human beings have been in evidence in these times of pandemic.
Human life is worth as much as what you can afford.

Hi friend @juanmolina

Imagine $ 2,000 and $ 3,000 in just 24 hours to receive medical treatment, with salaries less than $5 is an abysmal difference not to say from another planet. It is true what you mention, the insurance companies that have historically provided their services in the country have had to reinvent themselves in times of pandemic, however, the insurance companies in the hands of the state do nothing to cover minimum medical expenses to public employees who deserve hospital care.

Best regards, be well.

Is this site lying ? SALARIES IN CARACAS, VENEZUELA
. ? And this site Cost of Living in Venezuela. I mean if the cost of living is that high comparing on what you say, so people in your country eat only once a month ? Strange.

We also in Russia don't have high salaries comparing the prices of goods, but if the lowest is about $100, it could be enough for feed for one month. But, people may find good work if they look very well and don't stick to one town and work. Maybe it's the same in your country.

Fisrt I don't trust all websites. So, I would like to ask you. How much is $1 in your money ? And how much is the cost of food for example ? Maybe you have so low prices where even $5 is enough for food. I mean we need always to compare salaries with the prices.

I lived even in Algeria and they had the same salaries as Russia almost. Maybe a bit less, but not $5 a month of course. In Algeria $5 also may feed only for one day or two !

Wow. this evil virus has changed our way of life and financially, it is a terrible situation for any Venezuelan to reach those costs to pay for a hospitalization in a private clinic for covid, sincerely I can not pay that 20 or 30 thousand dollars.
But on the side of the insurance companies it is not easy, as you say, it can create and cause a great financial collapse in the insurance companies in Venezuela.

I do not personally know any person who can pay 3000usd per day for any service of any kind. I just don't know anyone with that ability to pay.

Enjoying an insurance policy is a luxury that almost no one can afford. I had a health policy while I was working in a private company, but when I left there, goodbye policy.

Currently, people do not even have their vehicles secured, despite the fact that it is a requirement of the land traffic law.

They made people afraid of this virus and now they are making their business. But, it's mostly not their fault only, it's also the fault of people who are not looking for the truth and trusting everything they read, hear or watch from the mass media.

I also think that this is all part of a plan created by a group of powerful people.
In fact, we cannot even speak of a conspiracy, since they have said it openly to the world: They, The World Economic Forum.

image.png

I don't even know about World Economic Forum because we have so many crypto communities to explore ! This forum is part of the system they want us to live in. The world didn't change, they want us to think that way. They just want more power and more control. In the video I see the nature that is always the same for so many years, the space that is the same for maybe million of years, we are living in the same earth, with the same people, same countries ... etc. They just want more control because maybe they felt that we are getting to close, too connected. Even the crypto was created to make us use an other monetory system that will make them weaker. I wrote a post about why bitcoin and all crypto made them create a pandemic. Here is it !

This is kinda serious. If 20k-30k will be a cost for treatment, isn't that much for a citizen at Venezuela considering the economical situation? Health and we'll being is one of the major cause of living. And in such a case of covid, what will an average financial life man do if him or one of his relative eventually ended up with COVID-19?.

Greetings, dear friend @benie111.

Getting sick with covid in Venezuela can be practically considered a death sentence.
Hospitals do not have the necessary supplies or equipment to care for a patient with covid.
Simply, the relatives take their patients to die in the hospital. I recently lived it with the case of my beloved Uncle Francisco, who passed away.

Currently my uncle Martín is convalescing, recovering from the covid. He no longer has the virus in his body, but the negative effects caused by the disease mean that he must breathe oxygen constantly. A bottle of oxygen costs 3 USD and only lasts 24 hours.

Greetings @juanmolina, insurance companies have always exploited the pockets of their users, now imagine in a pandemic they are not going to lose because if they do they prefer to close their businesses, but that will not happen because there are always those who can afford such an expensive policy, here the most harmed are the Venezuelan lower class who have no way to afford an insurance policy and this is added to the fact that public health services are in decline.

Good article.

Hello, dear friend @carlir.

The lower class of Venezuela is made up of 90% of the population, so the most affected are all, or almost all.

Insurance companies are companies that have existed for many years in the world and in my opinion, they provide a great service despite being high-risk investment companies.

It is always better to have a policy and not need it, than to need it and not have it ... remember that?

best regards, juan.
