We mature with experiences and not with age

Some say that maturity comes with age, but I really do not think so. I do not feel that age has got anything to do with maturity. I strongly feel and believe that we mature with the experiences of our life. I have seen people even at the age of 60 acting very dumb and at the same time a youth of 20 acting sensibly. Maturity solely depends on how one conducts themselves in life, what kind of choices they make, how they handle tough situations of life. With age we only grow but we do not mature.

The definition if maturity says that when something is grown fully maturity happens. We humans physically and mentally are at our peak in our 30s and 40s and ideally, we would say that the person is mature. But if the person has lived a very cocooned life, then it is possible that even at that age the person will not mature, though age wise may.
When a person goes through varied experiences of life, they understand the mental and emotional aspects of life. They will know how to handle critical situations. Just for e.g., between my Son and his girl friend, I will any day say that his girl friend is more mature than my Son, though both of them are same age. The reason being, that my Son has grown up in a very protected environment whereas his girlfriend has been raised in a very tough environment and whenever it comes to making decisions, she is quick and she looks at matters in depth rather than forming and judgements on the face of the matter.

Our age does not teach us lessons in life but our experiences do. We see that some people are very street smart in life and some fall back on books and advice from others to handle situations. That is where the difference comes in to the picture. Life can be very easy going with some and very tough for some. Everyone's level of maturity is different.

It is also not always about the hardships in life that mature a person. It is also about the exposure that one gets in life. You will see that when a person travels extensively or works in a job which has a high level of interaction in varied ways, these people will be smarter than the ones who are more operating out of their comfort zones in their limited space. They will have a better way of dealing with life. Family environment also influences one's level of maturity. If parents give too much of protection to their children, do not allow them to venture out and experience life by themselves, their learnings of life become limited in such cases.

Also, a person who is smart does not mean will be matured also. I always get amused with these debaters. They are all smart people, but yet on their debate shows they yell and fight with each other and I always wonder, which school did they go to and which environment were they raised in. There is no patience or understanding of others. Everyone wants to prove themselves right with their points and you will see them worst then children fighting. There is no maturity that you see in them while doing these debate shows. They need to put their point across and their maturity level will decide how they put their point across. Surely, they are all intelligent but not matured enough.

Hi @nainaztengra

To some degree I would agree with that opening statement that we mature with experiences instead of maturing with age. Sometimes people have very little life experience but they act more mature because ... of the fact that feeling of getting older.
I think especially with women age has a huge impact on their behaviours.

However, it's hard not to see your point of view. It's just I personally know number of people who life day by day and each day has been same as the other one. For many years already. Without any life experiences, like a robots on the auto-pilot.
According to your suggestion their 'maturity level' would not change. And that's not the fact.

So perhaps it's fair to say that both age and experiences affect our maturity level?

Yours, Piotr

Yes, Age also brings some level of maturity but not as much as experience brings. You know some people even in their 70s behave so mindlessly and not taking responsibility of themselves, it is due to many reasons but the main one I feel is that they lack the level of understanding and maturity of being responsible towards self.

Hello @nainaztengra
Interesting topic you have shared here. And I'm sure everyone can be interested in it.
I very much agree that age does not determine maturity, but rather it is the life experience itself, the situations that we get to live, that though is something that will mold and define our character.
Someone who lives in an environment of overprotection will have more difficulties to face life when things do not go so well, I have seen it on many occasions.
Although it might sound a little strange to some, the truth is that I am very grateful for the fact that I had things not so easy in general during my youth, because it allowed me to mature at an early age.
Great post, good topic. Good week to you.

Absolutely, an over protected environment makes one all the more vulnerable. When they are exposed to hard situations they feel lost and do not know how to manage them.
Wish you a good day @josevas217

Yes, that's right, I particularly appreciate the fact that I have had to overcome great obstacles, that's what I have learned the most from.
Thank you for the topic of discussion. Have a good weekend.

I would agree that age does not describe maturity at all, there are people who are mature but young in age and that's vice versa. Maturity is based on experience and of course, the way we choose to groom ourselves through life because some people do not necessarily have the personal experience, but they are fast to learn from the mistakes of others.

Not everyone will experience life in the same manner and in the same age but yes as we grow we are put through circumstances by life which makes us wise and capable of managing life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts @gbenga

Hello @nainaztengra
This is such a nice topic that you discussed in the post and I agree that maturity comes with experience, not with age. Its quite possible that someone younger than us can be more but someone elder than us is not. Nice write on the topic.

The more we get exposed to life the better we can deal with it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts @okalok
