A proud word – Biotope!
A proud word – Biotope!
People often exhibit two extremes: they exaggerate, as fishermen often do when trying to describe and show off the size of a fish they once caught, and those who constantly, or occasionally, downplay things. For example, teachers often downplay the importance of a lesson you learned, not giving it enough weight, as you might think.
You'll see one example of this understatement in photographs.
Often, when we see a small body of water in front of us, especially on the side of the road, we call it a puddle, and a small river we call a stream, which may actually be a wastewater treatment plant, essentially a puddle in a state of some movement.
We don't mince words when addressing such a body of water, as no one can resist us, like, say, a chef in a high-end kitchen who's asked to prepare and serve instant noodles or nuggets...
He'll immediately explain that this mustache's place is outside the restaurant, unless, of course, he puts noodles on the customer's head and inserts a nugget into the place where a pegasus doesn't have wings.
Essentially, any puddle is a very complex soup of life bubbling within it, and the fact that we don't notice it doesn't make this world, called a biotope, any less magnificent.
Like some haute cuisine dishes, a biotope is something to be understood, felt, and appreciated, not just said, "I stepped in a puddle..." :)
