THE FRAIL ONE

I, who am ugly, solid, loyal,
To you, who are beautiful, fragile, fearful,
Wish to cherish you always, modest
In a crystal-clear, honest existence.

Seated at a debauched café table,
Upon seeing you, frail and fair-haired,
In this old, corrupt Babel,
I felt compelled to offer you my arm.

And when you helped a wretched soul,
I, who was drinking glasses of absinthe,
Ordered the bottle, for I felt
You made me useful, kind, and whole.

"There she comes!" I said to the others;
And I sat staring, flustered and sighing,
At your body, lively and supple,
In the freshness of morning linens.

I saw you through the glass door;
And I envied—perhaps you didn’t suspect it!—
That simple, unadorned dress,
On your tender, immaculate waist.

The patriarch passed by, drawn by four horses.
I left, feeling sad, my head aching.
A loud, dense, black crowd
Returned from a monarch's funeral.

Adorable! You, so natural,
Were lost in thoughts of your embroidery;
In a wide, tree-lined square,
A statue of a king stood on its pedestal.

The nobles smiled in their carriages;
Yet, in the bright sunlight, guarding you,
Was your dear mother, who loves you so much,
Who won’t pass away without seeing you married!

What a splendid day! I was awed
By the purity of your Greek-like face;
And I longed to kiss, upon your chest,
A home, a haven of peace.

Graceful and without ostentation,
You walked, white, slender, and refined,
Through a throng of cassocked priests,
And high-ranking officials of the nation.

"But what if the turbulent crowd tramples her!
What if she’s accidentally struck down!"
Suddenly, you stopped, confused,
At the edge of a large gathering.

And I, weaving these easy sketches,
Thought I saw, with a poet’s eyes,
A timid, quiet dove
Among a threatening flock of black crows.

It was then that I, a man of resolve,
Wished to dedicate my poor life to you,
To you, who are gentle, docile, reserved,
I, who am skilled, practical, virile.
