Good stuff, the key is not reaching your goal, but sustainability and it becoming a part of your lifestyle. What I do somethings when doing pushups is count to 3 on the way down and count to 3 on the way up...that way I'm maximize each movement. When the pushups get easier, fill up a book back with books, then do the pushup with the book bag on your back.

Ya I've been catching myself wanting to go too hard...and a few times where it's like shit I got to listen to my body more and like you say:
