Not every tree grows towards the sky.

Some seem to negotiate with the land first.

I found this one clinging to a Welsh hillside, its trunk travelling almost horizontally before the branches finally turned upwards. Surrounded by ferns and uneven ground, it looked less like a perfect tree from a textbook and more like the result of years of adaptation.

And that was exactly what made it interesting.

🌳 Growing by Different Rules

There is something wonderfully imperfect about its shape.

The trunk bends.

The branches twist in different directions.

Nothing appears symmetrical.

Yet the tree is still there, firmly established on a slope that clearly had its own ideas about how things should grow.

Perhaps wind influenced its form.

Perhaps the inclination of the terrain played a part.

Perhaps it simply followed the space available to it.

Whatever the explanation, its unusual silhouette tells a much better story than perfect symmetry ever could.

🌿 Green Has More Than One Colour

At first glance, this photograph might seem dominated by a single colour.

Green.

But spend a little longer with it and the landscape begins to separate into dozens of variations.

The bright ferns in the foreground are very different from the darker vegetation covering the upper slope. Between them are patches of dry grass, exposed rock and scattered shrubs.

Then, right in the middle of all those textures, the darker branches of the tree create their own intricate pattern.

It is a scene that rewards a second look.

An Accidental Portrait

I normally think of a portrait as a photograph of a person.

But this image felt strangely similar.

The hillside became the background.

The ferns formed the surroundings.

And the tree had enough character to become the subject.

I did not need to isolate it completely from the landscape because the landscape is part of its story.

Its shape only makes sense because of where it grows.

🍃 Built by the Years

Trees are natural archives.

A twisted branch can record an old storm.

A change in direction can reveal years of competition for light.

A thick trunk quietly represents seasons that came and went long before anyone decided to photograph it.

We usually notice the finished shape without thinking about everything that produced it.

Looking at this tree, however, I couldn't avoid wondering how many Welsh winters were involved in creating those curves.

The photograph captures only a fraction of a second.

The subject took years to make itself.
