Today's episode of "What's that plant?" comes from a plant I just noticed this morning as I came in the gate to feed the chickens. It's raining a bit and the ground is wet, so I'm not worrying about watering.

Looks like Lamb's Quarter to me, but that may be my optimism speaking. It's popping up in a shaded part of the yard against the north side of the house. What are your thoughts?

Looks like Lambs Quarter, but spindly, maybe from previous drought or growing in too much shade. Does it smell like a old tire?

Maybe? It smells like something, but I can't put my finger on it. Sweeter than a tire, but I'll give it some time after the rain to grow a little more.

Some varieties down here smell like a innertube, or old tire. The further north, i notice they smell better, more sweet.

I'm gonna be looking into the best growing conditions and how to replant it.

Wonder what's in your soil that makes it smell different...

The soil here is much more basic than acidic. Also there is longer durations between rainfalls. Maybe it has something to do with the critters that would eat it to the ground, not sure.

If you want to propagate it, you may look around the neighborhood and find some going to seed. Pull a couple that are about to let the seed lose and place them where you want more next year. I would allow the one you have to run its course, if it is where you want it.

looks like a weed. I'd kill it. lol. I'd make a terrible homesteader I guess. I should take more time to learn plants, we such a variety.

I'm not a good homesteader yet either. I used to kill my weeds and ants with gasoline lol But since moving here I've become more conscious of what's going on around me. Some plants can be indicative of soil conditions, though I'm not sure yet how to read them. Always learning and trying to spread what I learn :)

haha! yes sir I love your attitude and your enthusiasm for homesteading is infectious! did you ever get a clear definition of homesteading?

I thought lamb's quarters when I saw it...

I'm hoping so. A naturally occurring edible would be really neat! I'd like to cultivate it in a good spot :)

Lambs quarters. :)

I think it's decided!
