One festival, multiple celebrations
India is a diverse land and multicultural. Each state of India has it's own culture and traditions. Today in Maharashtra we are celebrating the Makar Sankranti festival. This festival marks the end of the winter and the beginning of long summer days. People make offerings to Sun god and we make sweets of Jaggery and sesame seeds which is considered auspicious. In the state of Gujarat people are celebrating the Uttarayan festival, it is also known as the kite flying festival which celebrates the change of season and new harvest. In Tamil same day is celebrated as Pongal. In North India it is celebrated as Lohri and in the west as Magh Bihu. The reason to celebrate this day is more or less the same, only the way to celebrate is different. The rituals are different in different states. It is the day when the Sun transitions in to the Capricorn sun-sign.
Like wise even other festivals in India, it is something similar, the names and rituals are different but the reason of celebration is the same. Majorly this day is known as a Kite flying day festival, because even if it is only the tradition of one state, but almost every other state also celebrates by flying kites. It is a fun thing and at the same time dangerous for birds. Because the thread which is used to fly the kite is very sharp and it can cut you if it brushes through your body. So for the birds if they get in the way of it, they can get harmed. As a kid I used to enjoy, because I did not have much sense about it, but now I do not. Also these days I see people have lost interest in flying kites. I also saw one Insta post showing remote control kite, which I believe is absolutely no fun.
Anyways it's an auspicious day, Temples are filled with people today. I also plan to go later in the evening to seek the divine blessings. This is what I really love about India, we have something to feel happy about all the time. We can celebrate on something almost every month. This not only brings fun factor in life but also good vibes, because on days like these we do lot of prayers and rituals.
So here's wishing the Indian community a very Happy Makar Sankranti.
