Our house often has leftover fabrics, old clothes or small pieces. Due to lack of time or need, they are not used. In our house, my elder brother's wife is a tailor, she used to choose some small pieces of fabric while making clothes. And I kept those selected fabrics.

This challenge gave me the opportunity to use the old fabrics selected in our house and give new life to those leftover old fabrics. Today, I made eco-friendly placemats for the dining table using old and selected pieces of fabric. And the step-by-step details of making this eco-friendly placemat are given below.

♻️ Source of materials, what I used for this work:👇

  • ✔ Small pieces of fabric left over from sewing
  • ✔ An old pices of fabric that was not being used
  • ✔ A sewing machine to sew the fabrics
  • ✔ A scale to take measurements
  • ✔ A scissors for cutting clothes
  • ✔ A marker pen to draw marks
  • ✔ Ironing machine
  • ✔ My entire collection

I chose to reuse our home instead of buying new fabrics to make eco-friendly placemats, which follow the Reduce and Reuse principle.

✂️Step-by-step process for making placemats

Step 1: Choosing the fabric.
30908.jpg30593.jpg

✔ In our house, we have separated the pieces of cloth according to color and fabric type among the various types of cloth. From these pieces of cloth, I have mainly chosen cotton cloth.

Step 2: Ironing the piece of cloth
30610.jpg30611.jpg

30618.jpg

✔ I ironed the pieces of fabric that I chose to make the placemats well so that the cutting and stitching of the pieces of fabric would be perfect.

Step 3: Measuring and cutting the fabrics
30624.jpg30640.jpg

✔ The pieces of fabric that I took to make the placemats, I basically cut 7 cm × 7 cm squares. I prepared a total of 40 squares from 8 different colored pieces of fabric, 5 each.
📌 Calculation:
8 × 5 = 40 pieces were cut to make the placemats.

Step 4: Setting the fabric design

30643.jpg

✔ After cutting out a 7 cm × 7 cm square, I arranged all the squares to create a balanced pattern and took a picture on my mobile phone so that there would be no problem in creating the next pattern.

Step 5: Sewing the fabric pieces

30651.jpg30656.jpg

✔ At this stage, I sewed the pieces of fabric step by step in the order in which they were cut. Then I ironed them after each step. After sewing all the pieces of fabric, I sewed them all together.

Step 6: Attaching the back of the fabric
30666.jpg30847.jpg30680.jpg

30849.jpg

✔ This time I took an old unused cloth from our house, which is called kheta in our language. I cut the cloth to the size of my placemat, attached the back and sewed the top.

Step 7: Adding ribbon around the fabric

✔ Since the placemat was sewn with old fabric, I used orange fabric around the placemat. I finished it off by adding ribbon around the placemat.

The old clothes and scraps from our house are now adorning my dining table. Through this work, I have tried to play a small but important role in reducing waste and protecting the environment.

What I have learned from participating in this challenge is:

  • The solution is not to waste anything, but to creatively reuse.
  • Sometimes our small initiatives can make a big difference.
