Mind is constantly at work
Except for the time we sleep, all the time our mind is working. Possibly in sleep also it must be working and maybe that's why we have dreams. In a day there are so many countless thoughts coming to mind. If we sit to pray then that's the time all the possible thoughts will come to mind, like what do I need to cook today, what do I need to wear in the evening, what time should I catch up with my friend. All the garb keeps going on at the back of the mind. So then how do we silence the mind for even a little time during the day for it to rest.
With my experience and practices, I believe that doing something you enjoy the most really silences the mind, or a good chanting meditation. A daily minimum 15 minutes meditation will do a good job, but here also many people struggle to silence the mind, the thoughts keep coming. That is why chanting or breathing meditation or any guided meditation is good. I personally prefer chanting, because then my focus is only on the chant and while chanting how my body is responding. When I chant Aum, my focus is on specific body vibrations that I feel while chanting A-U-M, on each sound the vibrations shift in the body, starting from the belly going up to the top of the head.
The other good form of silencing the mind is with dancing. If one enjoys dancing, then this is also one form of meditation. I am not talking about the dancing in clubs, even that is not bad, but meditation dancing is different. You let yourself go free and flow in to the rhythm; the mind is so much in the present moment. It does not wander anywhere it stays in that moment.
These practices may not mean of value to everyone, but trust me, it has lot of value in it in the quality of our life. Mood gets better, anxiety level reduces, sleep is better, the whole-body system starts harmonizing with this simple routine of spending 15 minutes in silence.
