The spirit of Ramadan
From yesterday in our Country the holy month of Ramadan has started and it suddenly feels all so different in the city. Different for good, everything feels peaceful around and kind of life slowing down. It's a period of profoundness and a time for spiritual reflection. The period of Ramadan is just not about fasting but the significance of it goes much more then that. It's a time of empathy, compassion, kindness and spiritual growth.
Last evening I was at the beach and there were big family gatherings having their meals. During this month Muslim families come together to break their fasts, share meals and strengthen the bond with their family and friends. The daily fasting that is being done is to achieve higher level of spiritual awareness and self-discipline. In this month they also do a lot of charity work, helping those in need and proving that humanity still cares for each other.
In India it is very different, we can barely realize that it is the month of Ramadan, but here in Oman, things are different. The restaurants and all food places are shut till evening time. Everything opens up after 6 p.m.. It's not that food is not available, markets are open, just dining areas are shut. Whereas in India life goes on just normal.
The beach was totally packed, but the food court area near the mall was empty. I believe that it needs real guts to do this kind of fasting, because from sunrise to sunset, they do not even consume a sip of water, and I can only understand how difficult it must be. Fasting also has it's own advantages for the health.

This kind of practices inspire us to carry it's values and lessons into our daily lives.
